Morning all. I need European day trip cover for a trip to France to pick up some cigars at the end of April. I plan to use the E55, which will be 14 yrs 5 months old then. Does anyone have a recommendation for a provider?

I did exactly this last week when I took my 20 year old E-Class over for the day. I didn't think anyone would offer it but the AA did for a whole eleven quid!

Do you already have AA breakdown cover or motor insurance in the UK, though? I don't....

I have driven 40,000 miles on the continent since 2005 and don't bother with breakdown insurance now. My insurance certificate covers me for 3rd party in the EU. The first time I went over I extended my comprehensive cover outside the UK and bought breakdown insurance. If you are not confident in your car, why take it on such long journeys? My w202 is 14 years old and the s124 is 19 years old. I've used both, no problems. Save your cash and buy a few more cigars.

I do as a matter of fact but they quoted me on line without me telling them that as I didn't know my membership number. IIRC then the fact I was a member got me another couple of quid off. The first quote might have been £13.

That included repatriation in the event of a breakdown or accident.

I largely agree with you but you can't legislate for someone driving into the side of you, or a double puncture or something else that would be difficult to sort out with only six hours planned the other side of the tunnel. For the sake of £11 it seemed almost negligent not to bother.

I'm confident in the car, but there's always the unexpected....

Peace of mind for £10 or so seems quite cheap to me.

I admit that £10 for 1 day buys peace of mind and won't break the bank.
And Calais isn't exactly very far.

I guess my view is from much longer trips of 5k+ miles over 20-30 days where the costs start to mount up very significantly especially going to some of the less well travelled countries and also outside the EU.

And the other factor for me is the value of my cars which I wouldn't lose sleep over, even if they were written off abroad. A £5k hit is much easier to take. And I've probably saved at least £1k over the years, maybe more. If the car was worth or owed me £15k+ I'd take a different view.

I did some ringing around, and the best quote I found was from Heritage, which did it for £27 for the day (would only have been £30 for three days). I'm just about to ring them to see what they can do for my annual insurance policy.

If you are critically ill as a result of a serious accident on the Continent, don't these policies get you home (by air ambulance if required) at serious cost
to the insurer ?

Yes, they do if necessary.

We have RAC membership and just get cover from them when we go to Germany - works out at about £50 for a week IIRC. Our insurance on the Vito (Co-Op) includes European cover as standard.

I renewed three passports yesterday and couldn't believe how much that costs now!!

RAC charge £190 for annual European cover on the 124 at 18 years old. We have just moved bank account to a Nationwide Flex account. £10 per month fee but includes annual cover throughout Europe - any car in which you are travelling and any age of vehicle. Its underwritten by LV via Britannia rescue.

Will they bring you and your car home (you by air ambulance if required ?
