Excess engine oil -- Please help

Having had similar issues with my C220, I have a plan...
Next service (done by me) Im going to overfill the engine oil just enough to activate the warning system, then I'll drain a small amount from the sump while the plastic sump guards are off, until the warning goes off, Ill remove a further 150ml and at that point a dipstick from a donor car (any one) will be used to physicaly measure the oil level which is now at its upper limit. I'll scribe a mark on the donor dipstick and use it the old fashioned way from then on.

and all because some mb bean counter suggested deleting the dipstick to save some money; what a d........

I personally dont think it was a cost cutting exercise i think it was more of a ploy to keep the customer coming back into the dealer as they cant even do the basics of checking their own oil level

Instead of doing what you suggest, which would fail if there is a problem with the warning system, why don't you just put the right amount (6.5L, I think, but you should make sure yourself) of oil in and then check the level using a donor dipstick?

I think, and have observed on my car that, using the dash computer, the oil level takes a looooong time to settle. I only ever get a reading near its capacity if it's been left overnight. So if I refilled based on a reading 10 mins after shutting off, then the oil level would be bound to be over filled.

Also, the day-to-day level is not that critical on a Merc - there's a wide range of "OK" readings - mine went down to 5.2L between services and still wasn't asking for more oil.

I agree with stwat ; it`s one of my pet hates too. Willow 132 will be correct.
