Extreme exhaust tip detail

On a late R129 they are painted black...no chrome.

Polish up like chrome with some elbow grease though. Try a magnet and see what happens.

Rash you most definitely won't be going out in the rain now.

On the CL the tips don't come off. So when I had the secondary cats taken off I had them cut off the tips and re chromed, yes they are stainless.

I thought I'd show some before and after pictures to show what you can achieve with some persistence.

This is how the exhaust tip when I took it off the car. It looks like it should be scrapped but it is £300 for a new exhaust tip so I thought I'd see if I could improve its appearance before parting with my cash.

A couple of hours of sanding, working from a course grade down to a fine grade and then 20 minutes with a polishing mop ended with this.

Mine looks a little like the before image - are these easy to remove?

A couple hours work to salvage a £300 item Spike has earned £150/hr
for that mornings work.

No worries about redundancy for you, seems there is is a job waiting here amongst the forum members.

£90 from MB for the chrome tip (A1294920065). Nice job btw :thumb:.

That part number is no longer supplied - now superseded by A1294920414 @ £170.40 +VAT :(

Slightly less that £300 I grant you but sadly no longer £90.

Spike great work.

Rash, you can see the carbon reflecting on one of the siliencer boxes! Just taken delievery of a box full of old (clean) Tee Shirts and some chop sticks. Off to the garage.....:D

Are you sure? MB Oxford still quote for the cheaper part and the EPC still shows it as valid?

I tried to order the old part number both from Mercedes Brentford and inchcape, and had same response from both.

Polishing your pipes... love it.

Rash... That's just to clean you need a mirrored floor garage :)

I want to get mine clean on the ML and have tried with oven cleaner and metal polish better but Nothing like yours...

I just used fine steel wool and some water to clean my tail pipes and it came out fairly well....

Dunno if you guys will chastise me for it though...

If anyone else has a rough exhaust tip they want me to tackle and I'll do it and write up a step by step DIY as I do it.

You're only 120 miles from me - consider your offer accepted :thumb:.

They don't detach, so you'll have to come here...

I can only realistically do this if your tips are removable (so you can send me the tip).

Ideally I want something as manky and corroded as possible so as to show the transformation fully.
