F type !!! Or SL !!!! Decisions

Chap round the corner from me has a cabrio one of these in metallic burgundy , just looks and sounds fantastic.

That ^^ is possibly the finest rear on a car you'll ever see.

But the OP is talking about the F Type cab (not coupe), which IMO doesn't look quite so good.

In a agreement with you there - largely true of all cabs and coupes.

They (the two F-Types) drive very differently apparently.

This is brash:

The SL is understated, which is the point of it.

But that is the RS model, and the same could be said of the SL63.

This is the normal F Type....

Car dealers - the best and the worst (2013) (AutoExpress)
1. Lexus
2. Subaru
3. Toyota
4. Honda
5. Jaguar
..
12. Mercedes.

Not scientific, I know, but for several years Jaguar has been way ahead of MB for customer services etc. But……..

To put a little context to that, JD Power (2013) has MB with 115 faults per 100 cars and Jaguar at 164 faults per 100. I guess the way to look at it would be not to look and buy with the heart rather than the head?

F Type no question for me.. its just awesome in every respect.

As nice as the F Type is, if I was going from 2 cars down to 1 and still wanting it to be a convertible the folding hard roof of the SL is hard to beat. Plus the SL has twice the boot space of the F-Type. Maybe these are irrelevant to the OP.

Porsche 911. Once you have driven one, you will want nothing else. I miss the days before I had kids.

Elderly R230 SL aren't the most sought after of used car given all the problems they have.

I agree and not checked but pretty sure R129 are worth less than 90s XKs?

F type is just one gorgeous machine ... A beautiful design I think

A used DB9 for less than a new F

I didn't realise the prices were so different either.

The F Type Cab in 3 litre supercharged format is £58k.
That is 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds, so plenty fast enough.

The SL400 is also a 3 litre, I presume turbo or supercharged, can't find any info on the Merc site though?
But anyway, it is a 3 litre and 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, so plenty quick enough, and is £72,500.

I'm quite shocked at the price of the SL400, the SL500 is £82,000, compared with £67,000 for the S model F-Type. 4.6 vs 'only' 4.8 for the F-Type.

But the Supercharged V8 F-Type is £79k and 4.2 seconds to 60mph.
But that is SL63 territory, and that is £112,000.

I presumed they would be about the same price points, didn't think there would be up to £30,000 difference.
You could buy a nice 50k miles 10 plate Range Rover for the days you need more comfort and space with that much difference. ;)

Or an ML of course.

Has anyone actually sat in an F-Type? id imaging the quality/refinement to be far less than the SL.

All the modern Jag's ive been in certainly are, yes they look flash and good quality but once you use them you can see where the corners have been cut.

Which models do you mean? I agree the XF is actually a bit of let down interior wise for a Jag although is as good as its direct competition, but the new XJ is lovely interior wise, quality materials and a quality feel.

The XK is getting on a bit now and does seem a bit of a corner cutting exercise in some ways, but it's still a nice place to be.

My SL55 interior is a nice place to be ... well since I got rid of that awful aluminium tat it is, but I have to say out of all the cars I have owned the nicest interior in terms of feel and construction was my old XJ... old fashioned I grant you, but beautifully put together.

My guess is that you're hankering after an air cooled. It's 22yrs since I had my 911sc, fond memories of that car. However... If I was in the market for a focused 2seater then it would be the F-Type, IMO the SL looks overweight, but then again it's not competing in the same market as the F-Type.

The rag top is a pretty car, the coupe much more so.

If you watched some of the reviews you will see that most Journos recommend going for the middle range F model as it has a lot more toys than the base model [ no open exhaust, no adjustable suspension no LSD etc] So I would advise a pricing comparison against the mid range model rather than the base model.
