Familiar E55 W211 Moved to New Home Further North

What are you doing with the exhaust? Custom system or keeping it OEM?

I'll be leaving it as is, it's almost OEM, Alps changed the rear boxes to C63, also has Kleeman headers on it.

Well that systems already been perfected then ;)

Great to keep cars like this within our enthusiast community. I’m seeing far too many Mercs these days getting into the hands of people who rag the hell out of them then either wrap them round a tree or something goes bang.

Nice to see them getting the love they deserve. Good job.

As I mentioned earlier, I chiselled mine out but when it came to putting them back in I borrowed something like THIS THING.

Not exactly the same as that one, and it wasn't a brilliant fit, but it had the same effect. You don't need to hold the frame as such, you're only putting pressure on the bushes themselves.

You could probably make something up but as I have a mate who's a MB mechanic I just borrowed his.

Awesome work Pat, dam id love a Lift lol

Just happens I have a chap here that loves making such things. ;)

Made me a tool (big bar with welded collets) to lock the back axle yesterday to get the hub nuts off then a smaller tool to lock the drive shafts to get the bolts off these.
Of course I should really have undone the drive shaft bolts first but didn't think that far ahead. :)

One of the best investments we have ever made, less than £1,500 brand new.

We got it after putting a new engine in the Speedster you can see in my post 136.
Made a bodged lift to raise the car while I was under it (for ages) doing things up, almost needed a crane to get me back off the floor so the decision was made.

First couple of jobs were a Torque Convertor in a W211 and some welding and suspension on our old Transit, after this the lift didn't owe us anything.

front rear subframe bushes had been replaced recently Pat, so they should be pretty new anyway, but if you have gone to this extent already you may as well change the lot.

:)

Exhaust note is perfect IMO doesnt need touching :)

It still has the original air suspension so make sure you check the rear airsprings before putting them back in, no point replacing these unless they start leaking.

Front ones do look rather new, will check them out fully when I get more time.

It does sound rather nice doesn't it. ;)

Think I'll give these a good going over.

I'm guessing I can just remove the dust covers, inflate them then check for leaks in a basin like checking a tyre tube.

I know what you mean.

My cousins and I have access to a large garage. We decided to clubbed together and go for a 2 post lift. A few clutch changes, the rear main seal on the E55, general servicing, the list go on. Clawed the money back in no time.

Shame we don’t have a higher roof but good enough for our needs.

We went for a Twin Busch in the end.

Little bit more work done today.

Got the subframe stripped and gave this a quick clean up ready for a degrease then a closer inspection of all the bushes.

Overall doesn't seem too bad, a good clean up then coat of paint should make this nice as well as at least changing the two large rear bushes.
Will also have to check the diff. bushes etc. to make sure these are all 100%.

Sheared one of the bolts for the exhaust hanger so I'll have to drill this when I clean the bracket up (or get a new bracket).

Those exhaust hangers look in poor condition.
I'd get new ones while the subframe is dropped.

The icing on the cake though was that both the rear air springs were still inflated so no leaks after there being no airpump in the car for a long time.

They are in a bit of a poor state though so I'm going to have to deal with these.

Seriously thinking about new or reconditioned on these rather than me messing with them as I'll never get them looking the I need (want).

Who can tell me about airsprings, was thinking maybe Arnott new may be a very good option, anyone know cost?

One of the plastic brackets at bottom broke too so at very least I will need these OEM reconditioned.
