Fast Car, Young Driver, Inevitable Insurance

I had a Twin Turbo 6 speed manual Toyota Supra with 300bhp when i had just turned 19! Classic car insurance helped me through it!

I must admit I didn't think it'll go over £10K, but nearly £70K!!!

I remember many moons ago, there was this young rich kid who bought a RS Cosworth Escort, and he paid £25K for his insurance, I thought that was crazy until now

Picked up a saw from a bloke today - long story short it was the anniversary of his 17yr old sons death in a car. The driver (another 17yr old) had one of these 'insurance black boxes' fitted. The rules of the company said that they could overspeed by 50% (yes - 90mph in a 60) up to three times per (week/month - I forget which he said) and it wouldnt affect the insurance. BUT - they were heavyily fined if they were out after 11pm! So the kids then all waited till the last minute, and drove like nutters to get back before the 11pm curfew.

Sadly, said driver lost it and rolled it into a tree. DOA.

The bloke said the coroner slammed the insurance company for this reckless behaviour.

The bloke said there "was nothing left in life, he just got up, paid the bills, went to bed and that life was empty and pointless" after losing a petrolhead son. He suggested that these black boxes need to be scrapped. Or maybe at least the curfew thing.

A sad story. Does illustrate the problem with young drivers and their judgement, very directly.

My youngest (a mad petrolhead) has been saying how he wants a Subaru WRX STi when he's got a full licence (he's a couple of years away yet).

I've explained that the limiting factor will be insuring one, so as a bit of fun, and to get him to understand/realise this for the future, we hit a comparison site.

For the purpose of the exercise we declared him as 20 (he's only 16) and the car was a 2006 2.5 WRX Sti - value £14K.

I'm sure you know what's coming, however....

My lad is just 17 and we are getting quotes now, a clio 1.5 D £4000.

If we buy a Mini cooper and I insure it with the wife and my lad as a named drivers,
My lad just on a provisional licence as we teach him to drive £1400 but then £6000 when he passes his test.
So the result I take him to work and back!

Young Ringway, Les, (just 20) drives and has done for the past couple of years.

Vito 120 Sport V6
S202 2.6 V6
Golf 1.6CL.

I drive the Vito, S202 and 430V8.

Fully comprehensive is around £2,800 for both of us and anyone over 25 can drive all of the above with my permission. Anyone under 25, and I think I have to ask the question.

He's at University and also works for me delivering/collecting and as an employee, he's allowed to drive the fleet with the exception of the V8 which would incur an extra cost of around £450.00

When our 124 230TE (probably the slowest car I have owned in the last 20 years) was part of the fleet, the company we insured with at that time wouldn't insure him to drive that car at any price. I can only guess (1991 model) that the lack of airbags and other missing safety-related things are what caused the point-blank refusal.

5 Killed Speeding on Private Runway - ABC News

if you are going to drive like a nutter there is virtually no better place than this - surely? bar a proper race track? No public, no side roads, no other cars.

porsche idiot needs his balls nailing to a tree, especially for appealing.

Took more legwork then without the comparison sites!

Unfortunately for many insurance risks a comparison website is a complete waste of time. You need human interaction with a friendly specialist broker. (Not my firm I hasten to add, we don't specialise in your drivers.)

Im 23, and insurance on a 3.2 diesel is under £700. Although living in Cornwall helps as a low risk area.

I am not sure what is the factor behind such sky high prices for young drivers. OK they are riskier but surely risks are not 100 times higher. Observing drivers around it is not 17 year olds who appear to be most risky and aggressive drivers. I have seen even OAPs taking hair-graying risks recently.

Also based on my experience I was quite a careful driver just after passing the test because of being unsure on the road. Then over the following 10 years my driving became more aggressive. The incidents that showed me clearly that accidents can happen for reasons other than my fault resulted in more defensive driving. And it is not just my story I have seen similar patterns in other people.

An interesting topic... Lots of this is to do with car skills... How many teens do you know can actually handle a car on ice? I mean properly... When I was a 18 yr old, my dad took me to an empty car park one winter evening and proceeded to give me a solid hour's lesson in momentum and grip... In an 850 automatic Mini !!
The other piece of my 'training' was to ride a crap motorbike for a few years... 30 bhp and 90 if ya rode it off a cliff...
Soon figured out where the grip was on a road, type of surface, manholes, all that stuff, mainly because I had rubbish tyres....
I believe that training in proper car control, like lift off oversteer foe example, is what's needed but I can't see PM Camera-on doing that....
Just my two hap'n (however that's meant to be spelled) worth to this truly unresolvable issue. Drix.

My 18 year old drives a 2010 Renault Clio F1 Team.

The car is insured for damage to the other party only and he knows he has to pay for any damage to the car.

If he and it get to his 21st Birthday he gets the car.

Simple carrot and stick.

He's been driving for a little over 18 months and hasn't damaged a vehicle nor been pulled up by the Police.

He's currently booked into a defensive driving course and a track day in a Formula Ford to sharpen his skills.

Both my wife and I have a motorsport background plus we owned a specialist motor Insurance agency backed by Lloyd's for 20 years and know carrots do work.

Seems reasonable but you might want to go for a monthly payment plan - lol! Crikey - big bucks!!
