Fit Navigation to COMAND on 2004 W220 S320CDI

My Dad has just taken ownership of a 2004 S320CDI.

It has a Widescreen COMAND system fitted with DVD, Tape, and CD Changer in the Boot and its hooked up to the factory fitted phone system with a Nokia 6310i.

However it does not have the Navigation computer.

Does anyone know what parts I would require to add the Navigation computer, GPS aerial and any other parts required to set this up.

He is going ask at the dealer he bought from but I thought you guys here might have a better alternative, also as I live in Ireland the stealer prices are usually inflated even more so than the UK.

As far as I can tell it should not be that difficult as all I need is the navigation computer which fits in the slot above the CD changer in the boot the required cables, the GPS receiver and software. Any help is appreciated.

I've been reading the forum all day looking for a solution.

Is the DVD slot not for the MAP disc? Just put one in and you should be sorted.

I will try to get some pictures of the unit this evening but i have a feeling that the actual navigation unit was optional in Ireland.

When you press the Nav button on command it say something like "navigation unit not available" will check the actual wording later.

There is a empty space in boot above the CD changer for where the navi computer should be i think. The DVD slots in behind the screen.

Could it be as easy as just inserting the DVD navigation software in the DVD slot under the screen the dealer said it wast not fitted but then again this is our 3rd Mercedes in three years and i have to say the dealers usually are not that clued up on whats in the car.

Maybe the Dealer will let me borrow a disc to check that it works.

I have been looking on EBAY at the moment the current version is 4.1 but what does APS mean is this different.

all S classes after 2001 came with COMAND WITH NAV as standard so it will deffo have it.

just pop a map disc in there and you are away! unless the nav is broken or something?

Ok I was checking the Comand system last nigt and the comand manual.

In the manual it says that the map disc must be loaded into the navigation computer in the boot above the CD changer, in the boot there is just a hole where the computer should be.

so it was either removed at a previous stage or never installed and made an option for the Irish market( a common enough thing that often standard parts on uk spec cars are made optional to keep the pre tax price of cars down in ireland)

When you press the NAV or MAP buttons on comand it just says device not available.

Now what will i need to get it working I presume a Navigation computer to go in the book plus cables and a GPS aerial.

AFAIK, if you pop a nav disc in the slot above or below the screen in the dash even this will not work as this drive is for audio and video DVD only. The drive for the DVD nav disc is a dedicated one and lives remote from the passenger area, i.e., usually in the boot, in the bulkhead in my case.

All in all, to me at least, it looks like you have a nav disc drive either missing from manufacture or removed at some point since?

Portzy.

EDIT.

If it has been removed, and just the drive that is, then I would expect the cabling to be still there and all you need is the drive. If it, the drive, was never fitted at all then I would say get the dealer to check what is needed as even the cabling may not have been fitted during manufacture.

2004 and up S-classes have MOST wiring (like the 2003 and up W211s, for example). They also use the same kind of nav.system as the E-classes: DVD comand unit in dash and a separate navigation drive in the boot.

However, if the current head unit has a tape deck as well, it's probably NOT a comand unit. The DVD comand units only have a DVD slot and should be capable of playing movie DVDs...

If you have a regular Audio unit in dash, and want to get nav., you need to upgrade your current head unit and get the nav.drive installed as well.

The facelift S-class had the widescreen DVD unit but not the Navigation CD changer as standard. Should be fairly straight forward to add the Nav chnager, if you have an aerial on the top of the rear screen then I believe this is the nav aerial.

Thanks all. It is the facelifted S-class with Comand it has a widescreen screen with DVD and tape behind the screen and cd changer in boot I had a look in the boot but didn't see any "spare" cables on quick inspection.

It also has an aerial on the rear windscreen although i assumed this was for the phone, so if I get a navigation computer and wiring we should be able to install it I'll get the MB to check it out and see what parts are needed.

I think that we all tend to believe that what we get is standard throughout the Mercedes-Benz range, but each country tends to get a different specification. I do know that in the US the basic COMAND on some models does not come with the Navigation 'option'. I was criticised for saying that part of the COMAND acronym actually stands for Navigation!! (The brother of BigSys ;) )

I dare not comment on what the Irish spec's are as Pammy has already entered me into her little black book.

Good luck with solving the problem, but if it does have the navigational DVD option then the unit should be in the boot.

Regards,
John

Just to confirm my 2004 S320 Cdi has DVD wide screen comand head unit with seperate DVD Navigation computer in the boot , just on top of 6 disc CD changer. The S comand has two slots , the screen scrolls UP to allow DVD/CD insertion into a hidden slot, or scrolls DOWN to reveal tape slot. The Comand unit supports MP3 CD or DVD , the sound is easily comparable to the CD changer

Have just come across this thread. My father also has a 2004 S320 cdi and we are also based in Ireland. From what I can ascertain from the forum and from looking in the boot of his car, the Comand in his car may have the capability to provide navigation but because the separate nav drive (dvd?) is not fitted in the boot, it is not enabled. As already discussed in the thread, specs are not uniform across countries and the standard Irish spec seems to have lacked the nav drive.

(a) Can anyone confirm that my understanding is correct?

(b) If so, is the fitting of the nav drive likely to be a straightforward matter (ie is the loom/ fibre present)?

(c) Part number for nav drive?

Many thanks in advance.

Would be really grateful for any advice. Thanks.
I think folks are accepting that different countries have different specifications for the COMAND. I would suggest a pm to the member that contributed earlier in this thread might help answer your query (BigSis)

Good luck,
John

Alfie would know. Try pm ing him.

I suspect the reason for the navigation not being present is possibly due to the poor coverage of Ireland on the navigation disks. Hence there would be little demand.

However, this is a lot better on the newer COMAND systems.

I dont actully deal in any S class units and am not the best person to ask on this particular car. I would suggest contacting Richard or Miro.
