Formula 1 2020 (Will Contain Race Day Spoilers)

Pirelli have said on more than a few occasions, especially when facing criticism criticism, that they make what they're asked to. Effectively "Don't blame us, these are what the boss wanted". I don't see this changing with 18 inchers.

Yep, I've heard that a few times too. Often enough for it be believable as true.
Probably the last time Pirelli had any say was some time back when moving to larger diameter rims and lower profile tyres was being debated. Pirelli preferred the balloons as there was more space for its logo.

Pull-rod or Push-rod? :dk:

:)
Push-rod are easier to adjust and doesn't get in the way of the airflow near the side of the car. So, my guess is this style of suspension will prevail. Not having such a big undamped spring waggling around on the end of the wishbones will be helpful from a suspension engineering viewpoint. Adjustments made on the car will/should have a more direct effect on suspension behaviour.

With a larger rim, comes the opportunity to change the brakes, maybe move the top upright design to have the upper mount within the confines of the rim (if it's high enough) rather than mounted on a 'stalk' extension.

With lower profile tyres comes reduced slip-angle, so driver steering inputs will be more direct and the tyres may be less forgiving on kerbs, track imperfections and so on. 'Twill be interesting, I hope.

In some ways, it is surprising the balloon tyres were persevered with for as long as they were given they are undamped springs and, change the rolling radius as the sidewalls deflect vertically. If you ever notice 4WD tractors on the road pitching on their tyres (the old Fairey cranes were worse) you can hear the gears whine in sequence with the pitching as the gearing is cyclically loaded and unloaded due to the changing radius. Presumably something similar in F1 was encountered and had to be accounted for in the transmission.

If anything, I think the transmission will suffer more over the kerbs than they do now. The torsionals will probably be more severe and at a higher frequency due to reduced compliance. The engineers will be keenly modelling the torsional resonances because if it gets out of hand, things break quite quickly.

Your input is required in the Engine section of the forum! Enough said.

Wonder how many times one of the tyres ran away while Ted was making this video
DAS --take 53 -- and action! ;)

I guess they had it covered: :D

Me too.

If only this mornings timings were a true indication of race pace we’d all be in for one hell of a season with mixed up grids and results ...

DAS From Mercedes is genius ... what’s to say the 2021 rules wasn’t their inspiration ... ‘why has the FIA stated the steering wheel can only move to rotate the wheels?’ Enquires the engineers ...

Will others copy it, unlikely, as George Russell said on Weds this week, he has been a Mercedes driver for a long time and they have many things on the car and in development at any time and DAS is just part of the solution ... so with new cars needed for 2021 its highly unlikely any team would get budget approval for a few months of running ... plus I thought Herberts comment was interesting ... his view was these are the best drivers so how hard can it be for them to ‘learn’ to generate the effect manually

Roll on the new season

Claire Williams says team's struggles are 'not because I am a mum'

If she was not a woman or daughter of Frank would she still be in charge of the team?

She can't change who or what she is, but I do think she has done a great job dragging the team back to being a competitive outfit this year.
That's not easy for a mum or a dad, and even more difficult for some new 'Turnaround Terry'.....
