Formula 1 2020 (Will Contain Race Day Spoilers)

When is cheating not cheating?
When it's Ferrari

If what they did was fully legal why not just say so? Why did the FIA need to 'reach a settlement' if there was nothing amiss?

There was a time when FIA stood for Ferrari International Assistance. it's not so overt now, but I still wouldn't want to wake up with a dead prancing horse's head in bed beside me.....

Other teams not happy

Formula 1 teams are considering next steps after some were left "shocked" and "angry" by the conclusion to last year's Ferrari engine controversy.
....................

They are concerned that the FIA's attempt to draw a line under the matter does not make it clear whether Ferrari's engine was legal at all times last year or not.
.......................

The FIA clarification was issued on the morning of qualifying in Austin, and later that day a run of six consecutive Ferrari pole positions came to an end. The team did not set a pole position in any of the remaining two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi either.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said the two matters were not related, and that apparent differences in the car's straight-line performance seen by rivals were caused by the team changing the way they ran it and adding more downforce and therefore drag.

Looks to me like a certain team found a loophole/workaround solution for short-term increase in fuel flow above the 100kg/hr. Following an investigation by the FIA, that may well have not found a 'smoking gun', the team have agreed that whilst not admitting any wrong doing, if they had been exploiting said loophole, they would cease doing so. Furthermore they have shared information with the FIA on how to effectively monitor and stop others from similar activity.

I suspect that is as close to the truth as we, or anyone else, is likely to get.

Wasn't there a fuss over some teams (Ferrari?) burning lubricating oil as fuel?

Yep. Not sure how much advantage was gained, but I guess any advantage is an advantage...

I see the MotoGP boys will not be allowed to Qatar for their first race....that's very close to Bahrain:dk:

Due to COVID-19?
Can't help but think at least some of the F1 season will be sacrificed to it.

Unfortunately yes. Motorsport hasn't reacted quite as sharply as the Stockmarket, but I there is nothing to be done if travel bans are put in place.

Isn't Italy the base for many of the MotoGP teams in the same way as the UK is for F1. Imagine what would happen to F1 if the Uk had a big outbreak.

Qatar and Thailand both cancelled for the MotoGP guys. Moto2 and 3 still on in Qatar as the teams were already there for testing last week before the Italy virus problem escalated.
Sport will be ruined this year with cancellations of rugby, and football matches now commencing. Just waiting for the Olympics to be cancelled or moved.

Invent a new form of motorsport?
Rallycross was born from a cancelled RAC rally due to foot and mouth disease.

Maybe all the teams should hook up their simulators and put on virtual GPs...

Isn't that called Formula E?

Much as I'd like to hate Formula-E it's actually quite watchable - though I have to say that the original use of backing music during the race was appalling (now they just use it in the replays it's still pretty yuk but at least serves the purpose of differentiating the replays from the race) and the 'fan boost' is a terrible concept.

I struggle to generate any feeling of interest in Formula E in isolation. When electric bikes were introduced to the TT races there was at least a novelty value in the comparison with the normal bikes and everyone was surprised how fast they were and how they are improving. Crucially they were ridden by some of the names you already knew from racing the proper bikes. An all electric race meeting with 2nd order riders/drivers isn't the same.

I know some of the names for obvious reasons, but not all. Which of them wouldn't swap their seat to get back in an F1 drive.

Now if you were to put Lewis Hamilton and couple of other top F1 drivers in a Formula E, it would be worth watching. That's effectively what the TT zero race has done in recent years and it's more interesting because of that.
