Front discs for W203

Hi,

I'm new to Merc's so I'll not comment on the suitability of these disks, but I will mention that some insurance companies regard these as a performance upgrade and if you've not told them about these 'upgraded' disks they can invalidate your policy.

Might be worth asking around to see if anyone who's with the same insurance company has gone for upgraded disks and if they had to 'declare' them.

Insurance companies generally do a good job, but some are renown (especially the 'cheaper' ones) for finding something out-of-place and therefore invalidating your policy if you make a claim...

Always good to check these things before going ahead.

Dobbs.

I need new discs for my W203. I've had a look on eurocarparts and there's various matches. Eicher Premium Brake Disc (Front) look ok to me. They're drilled and vented which the originals aren't. Can anyone give me any pointers?

I imagine that your original discs are vented, did you mean that the Eicher discs are drilled and slotted?

Why not stick with the standard discs? Slotted and drilled will offer no real advantage over plain discs on a C270. Drilled and slotted discs can also increase pad wear and may be more prone to cracking. You are also (assuming the same diameter is kept) reducing the disc surface area for the pads to work on.

High performance cars use the drilled and slotted type for two reasons , sometimes cosmetic and also because some pads can generate a gas when hot and the slots etc allow this to escape and can also aid cooling.

I may be wrong but I believe F1 discs are not drilled etc :D

Thanks for that. Yes the original are vented but not drilled. tbh I'd prefer something close to the oem discs to ensure the size is correct.

There appears to be a difference in the sizes. Where can I find the correct one?

Get them from your MB dealership. Service parts such as discs and pads are very competitively priced and you're sure to get the correct parts.

Unless you need them immediately, get the from here Eicher Premium Mercedes-Benz | Car Parts 4 Less UK?s No.1 Car Parts Retailer

Cheaper and same company. Not drilled either so correct fitment. As stated previously, you don't need drilled or grooved discs on your C270 .

Incidentally, ECP made a mistake listing that disc you linked in your first post. It shows a 330mm dia disc and C Class has 300mm dia discs. Check all the other brands and see.

Didn't the W203 with Sports Pack have larger diameter discs? the ones on mine were (had to have 17" rims) and were cross drilled.

Would the 270 CDi have sports pack?
If the discs currently on the car are undrilled, would that not indicate sports pack not fitted?

I have 17" rims on, but the discs aren't drilled. Just vented.

Will I need a wear sensor? Or is that part of the pad?

If your brake lamp is lit, the sensor wire has been cut so you'll need a new sensor. The sensor is about £3 -£5 extra.
Might be an idea to take off a wheel and measure the diameter and see if you have 300 or 330 dia discs fitted.

The light isn't lit, but I had an advisory on the MOT for the discs. I'll probably get some more use out of the pads before I change the discs though. And yes, I'll give them a measure!

My 270 had the Sports pack fitted. See my album. Was a fairly common option on runout models

It's possible the OP's discs have been replaced already?

I'm not saying the OP has Sports pack brakes just commenting that ECP may be referencing them on their website?

Understood:thumb:

my c270 has the sport pack and has 330mm discs ( drilled). i replaced the discs a while back for after market (like for like) and had nothing but trouble. after about 2k miles the brake judder was so bad they had to be changed again. i went to my local main dealer and managed to negotiate a 21% discount on a set of front discs and pads! these have been on the car for 40k miles now with no issues.:thumb:

In my case if you buy cheap you buy twice, you buy quality you buy once....

Replaced W203 front and rear discs and pad Discs are Bosch and Pads textar went for 1400 Miles trip v smooth

I've used Eichers from ECP on a variety of cars. No issues to report, good value.

As previously said, the drilled discs are larger diameter (330mm) for cars with the Sports Pack, so check that the diameter is correct. Cars without Sports Pack have 300mm discs.

I fitted Pagid discs and pads from ECP and they've been excellent. If fitting yourself, remember to apply a generous smear of copper grease to the back of the pads, where the caliper piston makes contact, to stop any squealing which is caused by the pads vibrating within the caliper.

There is only one wear sensor per axle, the front one is on the drivers side IIRC.
It may also be a good idea to buy new retaining pins and springs kits as the old ones can be a pain to knock out if they've been in situ for some time.

On my W203 the front were 288mm normal spec, I tried drilled disks twice, They looked the business, they were great when new, good when not so new, poor quicker than none drilled ones, they don't last as long a none drilled ones, they tend to wear the pads and disks none uniformly, ie where there's a hole this diameter wears more, so the disks have circles of excess wear.
Then there was the problem with noise, the car was washed with a spray lance, this pushed the dirt and dust out of the holes and on to the braking surface, this caused a noise as the disk passed the pads, audiable when going slow.
