This time for somthing that actually does need attention

Now I know one of these is broken, and I don't begrudge it that at 170K.

What is the best place to get a new pair from? MB? (had some from MB for the 280CE and think they were cheaper than GSF at the time)

MB 100% of the time unless you want to lower then Eibach orr H&R

yes - mb.

give the full VIN.

the UK market uses a sacrificial alloy spacer piece under the spring to avoid breakage due to rust - get those.

Definitely M-B. There are many different springs available, depending upon your vehicle spec. M-B have a spring chart which they use to determine the correct ones for your car, based on the options fitted. GSF/ECP etc will supply a one size fits all spring. You'll only do it once, so you might as well do it right.

The last springs I got from ECP were made by LESJOFORS/KME who are part of the Beijer Alma AB group a Swedish conglomerate. They appeared to be of good quality and fit and were 1/2 the price of the MB springs! At the time ECP offered standard and heavy duty versions. If you want a "tailored spring" as BlackC55 says then get them from MB.
