Today we had a round trip of 155miles with 90% been on motorway. With 4 of us in the car I was wondering what kind of economy we were going to get on our W246/B180 petrol. As the car is only 4 months old and now has a bit less than 3K miles we did not have the chance before to check it as it spends most of its time on a school run and London driving in general.
When we got stack in traffic in M25 I thought that was it ...We will never going to get any good fuel economy. However with me driving on the way to our destination and wife driving on the way back and with the use of CC I was pleasantly surprised that we ended up with an average of 49.5MPG (3:45h at average speed of 42MPH).
I would say that is not bad for a petrol engine.. It shows how much progress they have made in the last few years but also the importance of high torque at low revs which was benefiting diesels but now with the introduction of turbo petrol engines the balance has started shifting again. If I
Beyond the very good fuel economy the engine is super smooth and happy to be pushed when need to and the overall comfort of the car as I said in the past is exceptional.
So with the new push against diesels I am wondering what else we should be expecting in few years time by the newer petrol engines. I believe give it few years and we will be able to get real 60MPG for mid size cars.
