Fuel Economy

19 mpg town driving and 21 mpg on a run. I reckon driven at 70mph on the motorway 25mpg should be possible, not bad from a 7.3 litre V12 with 100,000 miles on the clock

City or highway? I can't imagine you'd get 23 on the motorway! The difference between the 200 and 230 is not all that huge.

Hi all, I'm lookig to purchase a C220 CDi Coupe pretty soon. What sort of mpg should I be getting out of one of those?

I'm currently getting around 28mpg from my CTR.

My crappy Lexus IS200 SE Auto of Feb 2003 gets 36.2Mpg on the motorway with light foot, driving on Snow bottom and about 65Mph. Don't want to talk about driving in Town... ;(

Can't wait to collect my new C220 CDI!!

Well my A200CDi (W169) returns, now it has 25000 miles on the clock, regularly arround th 50mpg on my normal journeys (motorway and a-roads).

I have seen on the display "Average Speed 52mph Average Consumption 52mpg".

"Nipping to the shop" though it drops to arround 35mpg .... glad it wasn't bought for this ...

My wifes SLK200 (R171) is averaging about 32mpg on her normal journeys which are at most 10 miles, which is great for a very fun car.

hi i average 17.8 i can get mid 20's on a run.

You know what? The 730 rides better, is arguably a nicer place to be, has no i-Drive (a good thing...) and does 5MPG less overall than the 535d.

But yeah, the diesel is much quicker and like your 320CDi, will undoubtedly improve with mileage.

Not sure I did the right thing with this 535d though; it just hasn't stirred me in the way I'd hoped. The smiles per £ from the 730 have been significantly broader... :)

Interesting to see that the 535 isn't all you intended - I considered a 535 Estate before plumping for the E. But I'm not surprised the 730 rides better. IMHO BMW Sport suspension and runflats are just too hard for average driving. I tried a 330D Sport a few years back, and it was a real boneshaker.

I think I need to try harder on mine, I have once seen 28mpg but nowhere near what you have got.

I am actually just about getting 300 miles a tank in the SLK55 AMG and it has a 70 litre tank but I am conscious not to boot it around all the time.

My display is struggling to tell me I'm doing 40mpg in the C220 CDi.

I'm getting anywhere between 40 and 50mpg out of my E220CDi w211. It loves the motorway and cruising at a decent speed and you can put it in cruise control and see the mpg go up and up to 50mpg!

As soon as you turn off the motorway the mpg goes down to the 30's but it still delivers more mpg than my wife's micra. Strange isn't it.

I once got 40mpg avg out of my C180k SE, my SLK does around 32 on long journeys and 23ish on short.

friend of mine has a CLS320cdi gets 49mpg.

Hi all, my first post.

I have been driving normal/mid/small type saloon cars for many years, all diesel and have enjoyed very cheap motoring, Tax/Insurance/MPG 50+

Hav decided to get a better car and treat myself, but still want to keep costs down, MPG will be a big issue for me all other things being equal, I do about 12/15k each year, being a shift worker, I don't spend too much time in traffic, most of my driving is at about 70 on motorways and 30/40/50 around towns etc etc, I'm a relaxed driver who often likes to attain very hi MPG's.

Two cars are in the running at the moment.

520 D Auto 177bhp, MPG figs are 40/60/50 approx

CLS 320 CDI 2005/2009 MPG 27/47/37 approx

I have a few friends with the 520 D Auto, they average about 50 MPG, one friend has a Manual 520 D, he gets about 57 MPG.

I don't know anyone who has a CLS 320, so I'm hoping I can find a real life MPG for the CLS 320.

Any comments/views/numbers on the MPG are most welcome, tks in advance.

I have searched here and on the net, but can't seem to find too much info on real life figures.

Cheers.....

I drove from Bristol to Crystal Palace yesterday, and averaged 46mpg combined M4 and central London. Driving back today through central London, the computer showed 31 mpg, which was followed by a 70mph cruise along the M4 back to Bristol. Total trip today averaged 42mpg. Going over to Cardiff last week, which is largely a cruise at 50mph, I got 51 mpg, although this dropped to 46mpg once I was able to pick up speed and cruise at 70.

This is way better than I ever got out of my 320cdi E-class, from which the best figure obtained was 43 mpg following a prolonged 50mpg crawl. Most of the time, it was 38-41 mpg on a run, and mid-20s urban. I know that was a bigger car, but the V6 engine has the reputation of being less economical than its predecessor not more so. I am so glad I went for this engine: just cannot fault it.

This is the very best I have had from my CLS 320.
Out of town long runs normally give me about 47mpg if I'm staying close to legallity, but the computer is showing just 42mpg for the last 3000 miles as I have been working very close to home and so doing mainly short trips.:o

PS. Where did you dig this thread up from!

Mactech - have you got anything installed in your car that may positively affect its MPG readout :)

I'm guessing the 9 mile 10 min 53 average is a reset at an indicated 55mph and a coastdown...

I've checked the readout on numerous occasions and it is always within 1.5% of tank to tank measurments.
But, I have a Brabus box which makes 600Nm of torque....and yes, that reading was done with a reset and driving gently on dual carriageways and at least four roundabouts. Around Royston as I remember. There was no coastdown and a slight headwind and as you see the car was still at 40mph as the picture was taken.....:o

As we use l/100 km your figures does not mean anything. Is your calculation in UK gallons; 4,55 litre or US gallons?
At 75 miles cruise I got 5,9 l/100 km on the computer however the real figure with brim to brim calculation was 6,7/100 km
