Does a fuel filter really cost £80 and is it not part of the service?

I was quoted £300 for the 'B' service and £80 on top of that for the filter. This was from a main dealer..

That will include labour and the part and the pipe clips oh and VAT.

Go to an independent. It will be much cheaper.

Thanks, I'm tempted, I'll ring around tommorow for a quote.

Im down south in Essex but my full B service from an indi was £220 with all parts , fluids and filters 'not mb parts though at that price', plus all glow plugs changed for another £100.

And they gave me a little run about car for the day.

alot of the merc garages do price matching now. my one in MK knocked £140 off my last service to match an indy. Well worth a look.

guys may i pliz have the names of those indy garages, my car is due for a b service nau

P1nny

what garage in MK did you use and the price for the B service.

80 quid for a filter , total robbery.

It is just unbelievable the variant in prices.... pure greed

Went to an independent Merc specialist in the end. Mobil 1, genuine parts, £250, including the fuel filter !

Ive just replaced my fuel filter at a cost of £18 plus vat. Was not a genuine filter i might add.

You could replace it yourself. Its only two hose clips.

They only charged me for the filter, no fitting cost when they are doing the service anyhow...;)

Well so much for 'Yes we use genuine parts sir'

You cant trust anyone these days, best off doing it yourself like you said !

A MB fuel filter is £18.80 IIRC for a C220CDI.

What make is it? As long as its one of the leading brands it will be fine.

Hi Olly, yes it probably was fine, but 35000 miles after the 'genuine' filter was fitted, I replaced it my self and it wasn't a genuine part I took out.

Sorry, I'm talking about the engine air filter here that they did on the same service.

I'll check the fuel filter this w/e when that gets replaced

What oil did they use genuine Tesco 15/50, who knows ?

change it yourself for £10 for a filter from europarts, a fairly simple job, just keep the receipt of the part and it still keeps your service history in tack, anyone can service there own car if they wish as long as it is carried out to manufacturers guidlines and you keep the invoices and receipts of all parts used you can fill out the service book yourself

OK, the genuine fuel filter fitted last service, not, was a Hengst, and I was charged £30 + £18 to fit.

The genuine air filter fitted last service, not, was a Puro or something similar, (I already binned it), I was charged £26.26 + £18 to fit.

The list goes on, Oil, £76 !

I didn't take much notice at the time, but won't be using them or any other independent I don't know again.

This time I bought all genuine parts my self and got the oil/fuel filter and oil changed.
Service was reset but is now showing 10,000miles, it should be 17000miles.

In the menu on screen it only shows QF 1.0 as the choice of oil, + button does nothing, is this a STAR job ?

Cheers

Genuine fuel filter is around £19 + vat
Genuine air filter is around £17+ vat

Remember it may be good to service your own car, but it is not just about replacing the filters.

Trained technicians may spot things & carry out checks that you wouldn't know how to or that needed to be checked.

Find a good honest independent, there's a few of us out there.
