Gearbox program irritating!

With the proviso that this happens when you are driving like you have your great grandmother holding a crate of eggs in the passenger seat, which isn’t what these cars were designed for, I can attest that:

Upchange to 4th: 18 mph, 1000 rpm
Upchange to 5th: 25mph, 1000 rpm
Upchange to 6th: 30 mph, 1000 rpm

All rpms in the Upchange gear. Admittedly I was exaggerating in my first post. And it doesn’t do that if you drive more spiritedly. And 6th in a 9 speed box is probably like 4th in a 6 speed, or something. But as Riano said it’s a lot of gears to change down. And yes I would like a C program that didn’t do this. No current engine flies at 1000 rpm. 1500 rpm in the same circumstances would be spot on. All about emissions.

That surprises me. It’s been a while since since I owned a car with the ZF 8 speed (also an A6) buy I thought it was an absolute blinder for a traditional automatic.
Back in 2013 my wife had an Audi A6 Avant 2.0 Multitronic, I quite liked it until it had to go in for a recall and they gave me a courtesy car, the 3.0 litre A6 with tiptronic gearbox. The difference was night and day between the multitronic and tiptronic boxes, so much so that we traded the A6 in for an SQ5 the following week…..there was method in their madness giving me that 3.0 A6 courtesy car!

It was the 3.0 BiTDi engine in my A6, mated to the ZF 8-speed auto. It was the very catchily named Audi A6 Avant 3.0 BiTDI [313] Quattro S-Line Black Edition. I’ sure they’re all of the right words, and I think they’re mostly in the right order 😁

Aye it was the black edition trim that we had, but only the 2.0 multitronic😫 To be honest I think we would have happily kept it longer than the two years if they hadn’t given me the 3.0 courtesy car, it really did make you aware of the delay in the multitronic box in comparison to the tiptronic one.

I personally would reset the transmission learning process. Everybody has a different driving style. If i remember correctly you put ignition ( but not running ) then push accelerator to the floor beyond the kickdown switch for 20 seconds, then turn ignition off, and then release pedal. There are videos on youtube for this. Found my car to have much better changes after doing this. Hope it helps.

My car was Stage 2 tuned when i bought it.

Very quick and rapid changes.
I also had a stage 2 3.0 supercharged but still didn't get on with the 'box!

That is potentially very helpful, thank you. I will take a look and give it a go for sure.

If it does "reset" anything then the gearbox will quite quickly revert back to the previous state unless you carry on driving it with higer rpm and more rapid throttle inputs.

Ok thanks. I will try next time I’m in the car. Was in 8th at 40 mph today, 1000 rpm, silly.

I know. I can get mine to select 7th at 40 and 1000 rpm.

The only reliable way to ensure quicker response is to pull back on the left paddle for over 0.5 s and let the gearbox select the lowest possible road speed and gear combination. 👍😁

I had to bite my tongue earlier, but I can’t keep biting it 😁

Unfortunately it doesn’t reset anything. For some gearboxes it fools the car into thinking that it’s been at wide open throttle for 10 seconds and therefore temporarily has a heightened state of alert which soon subsides when it realises that it has not actually been stolen and chased by police chase at 2am, but is instead rolling in slow moving traffic on the way to Waitrose.

I've not seen a 3 litre twin screw supercharger on stage 2. Sounds amazing 👍 Do you have any photos of the beast?

I've have seen 2.3l and 2.9l and only heard of 3 litre, for the drag and those are usually tuned at stage3.

Would be nice to see some pics 🙂

@badgx he means 3 litre Audi engine with a supercharger, not a 3 litre supercharger on a Mercedes V8.
Yes exactly this, sorry to disappoint @badgx nowhere as exciting 🙄 a mere 480bhp/600nM... stage 2 with MRC who are one of the go to companies for VAG. Still went like stink off the line thanks to quattro, but nowhere near as much fun as my AMG V8 😁

No worries mate 👍

Ha! Ok thank you. What I’d like is something between the two. Like you used to get on a standard auto gearbox a couple of decades ago

They do a three litre whipple kit for the M156....

I don't have enough experience of the 9spd gearbox to comment but driving through Birmingham this morning in Sport in my 204 C63 I thought it was sort of what you're after @Engadine. It cruises at C revs but accelerates up to about 2krpm under light throttle. Kick down is affected by how gently or otherwise you've been driving.

The biggest problem on the 204 is a jerky 1st gear but I expect that's much improved on the 9spd. It takes a lighter right foot than you might expect to avoid being overly sporty but I think it's a good mode for general road driving if C is too lethargic.
