Gearbox/transmission in cold weather

Assuming that MB uses Fuchs Titan 4000 as its own branded ATF is my choice is obvious. Btw, Fuchs is red in clour according to the spec

I thought MB ATF for the 722.6 was made by either Shell or Febi.

All ATF is red in colour.

The factory fill on new cars seems to be a colour other than red (I know the colour isn't relevant since it's a dye to distinguish ATF from other fluids), but it was not red in the case of my tranny and many others that I have read about. MB does mention Shell ATF 3403 M-115 and Esso’s ATF LT 71141 in their WIS manuals but I have never managed to track down small supplies of these fluids.

Just to close the books sort of speak. Last month as expected changed oil (although only 6 litres went in despite drained converter) and filter, counter's reset, all works....but main problem remained as it was albeit may be at not such scale as in the past. Admit that gears now change smoother and all that, but it still takes to reach its operating temprature (appx 10-15 minutes) for gearbox to operate properly. It only happens on a cold morning though and if it's +7-8 or more o/s, no probs.

What I noticed that if lights are on and gearbox is "half asleep" (not to its running temp) it fails to lit a selected gear (usually only D and 4, but sometimes 3 if it's very chilly), yet if you twitch it a bit it may come on as there is some loose contact somewhere. Looks like electrical, yet at +10 or higher nothing like that ever happens or after running for sometime it all disappears and is perfectly normal. Showed it to my gearbox speacialist, but he's advise is to leave it as it is. Well, may be he's right after all.

I am having a similar problem with my 1998 C240. On cold start ups in the morning and evening it will not shift from gear 1 (when in Drive) to any other gear unless I manually select gears (2, 3 etc). After around 30mins the gearbox will act normal when its warm.

Do you think I should get the Transmission oil & filter changed? I got my E500 one done (even though there was no problems just for peace of mind) at Bedford Mercedes for 102.00.

I took it to my local Mercedes-Benz dealership and they didnt bring up anything on diagnostics. Please advise! Thanks!

I also have the exact same problem with the D light not coming on sometimes, as if its a connection problem, if I move the gear lever a little it will turn back on again.

Maybe there is a Mercedes-Benz recall for this C240 model? Mine has 109,000 miles.

cold shift 722.6

My c230 (US version) displays the same troublesome shifting/nonshifting when cold (below abour 50 degrees F; that's about 10C). What's the fix? My car has a new valve body and new pump.

Do not forget that the 722.6 box was designed to hold onto the lower gears to warm up the CAT, and this is not a fault
