I have started seeing a few Mercedes, Golfs, Porsches etc with replica pressed steel German style number plates, with the UK registration number.
They actually look good.
But are they legal.
Does anyone on here have them?

you can get them from the dealer, mercedes croydon had them at the parts desk, i think it was £30 odd pounds not sure if it was single or a set. still looked nice but mine do'nt need changing so why waste money!

No, they're not.

M-B dealers now sell metal (aluminium) plates, but these have a UK-legal flat surface (they look just like the normal perspex plates but are meant to be more durable).

But arguably no worse that plates that have had the spacing messed about with and various coloured screw covers added in an attempt to make it look like it spells something.

In fact in standard form the German plate is probably just as legible as a UK one.

To be legal, they would need to meet the British Standard and be in the approved font.

To the human eye maybe, but not sure whether the various UK ANPR systems would cope with them. Whatever, the answer to the original question is that they're not legal.

What do these look like?

Bogus? Barry Boy? Spivvy? Illegal? Pseudo? Laughable? A new low in modding bad taste? A gauranteed reason to be stopped? A possible reason to have your car impounded? sh1t?

That's what they look like to me anyway.

Do they just feature the raised font (which most plates here had before the 80ies) or are they white and have a stamp with the local crest in the middle? :)

The stamp / crest in the center is actually the years tax. Changed each year and always a different color.

Ive always liked this: :)

How about having a German plate on your car, and your real one at the sametime!

Oh dear...

The crest is just the mark of the local authority issuing the plate, there is a separate stamp on the plate which is the tax.
