Gone And Bought Myself An AMG...

Thanks Paul, it's going to be quite a big job to get her back up to scratch. :thumb:

Maybe so, but at £800 as a starting point, you have some slack to play with.

Having paid in the high teens on several occasions for cars, my last two purchases (both MB's) have cost £1000 and £1100.
They are both used for taking my dogs for excercise and parking in places where I wouldn't park my Vito.
I've spent more on the Vito than the two cheapies combined and I'm not worried what happens to them, really. What's not to like? :)

I've scratched the getrag idea, I've got enough on in just getting it up and running and the paint sorted out.

I'll follow your progress with the car here Lee, but from the outset I've been curious why you considered converting to manual. Is there something specific to this model that makes the auto version less than it could be?
(My preference will always be for a two-pedal car to indulge in left foot braking - transmission type being of lesser importance than the two-pedal aspect (AMT, DCT, TC epi', CVT, etc)).

On paper, the conversion is 'do-able' and I genuinely think that proper power/fast cars should be a good old fashioned manual with a gearstick. I beak with my left foot when driving a manual, although this seems to be frowned upon on this forum, it's something that I've always done though and can't do it any other way.

I was also then reminded that Mercedes are not exactly known for their manual gearboxes and it would be a better idea to just leave it well alone and concentrate on getting the car up to spec.

Getrag box aint Merc though! Much better surely?

I'd stick with auto though - but then again it's not my car!

A picture of the rather nice interior and of the engine...

Work begins tomorrow.

Wish me luck...

Nice one....the engine looks clean :thumb:

Someone dipped the steering wheel in magnolia paint.....what's all that about? :)

Progress is a bit slow at the minute, waiting for certain parts and also my indie is snowed under with work.

Here's some pictures of the body (and other bits) to give you an idea of the mammoth task in front of me...

The engine is turning over but there's no spark, which is down to the coil pack wiring loom.

Got a repair kit from the main dealer for less than £30 and it's getting delivered Wednesday so that will be D-Day.

After I've rescued this C36, I'm more than likely going to buy a C43 and carry out a conversion and drop a 55 engine in.

Quick update for those interested;

Bought a new battery and crankshaft position sensor from Mercedes, the CPS is being fitted on Thursday so hopefully that will cure the same fault the car keeps bringing up, it's a ball ache to get out so we were hoping it wasn't that, but c'est la vie!

More progress should be taking place over the coming days, so I'll keep this thread updated.

Nice one mate, always good to see a car like this restored.
