Ok my CLK220 Diesel needs a 'B' Service.. phoned mercedes they quote 500+ quid..

Im hoping to find a good alternative.. because surely changing the oil and some filters doesn't really need to cost that much

Worth the trip to see Andy at AutoBarn, at Ledsham, near Ellesmere Port (CH66 9PA). 16 years with Mercedes dealership, now independent. Terrific mechanic, excellent facilities, highly recommended: have used his services and been mightily impressed. 0151 347 9999/07914 805586.

How does that work? I thought they had fixed price servicing and that a B service should be less than £300.

Interested to know as I expect to take delivery of my car next week, and had planned on reasonable servicing costs.

I can't believe that the 'extra' consumables you may require would be £200+.

Don't know how handy it would be, but Trefnant Garage has been mentioned in the other forum.

Also, see your location mentions Portsmouth - you could go to PCS while there.

What made you think that?
I can't believe that the 'extra' consumables you may require would be £200+.

Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs (on petrol's), ATF (on auto's), brake fluid are all on time / distance schedules. If they all fall at one then the bill will be substantial. It's worth looking at Mercedes Service Care and, if you can, make sure you've got cover in place if all those items are going to hit at the same time.

Perhaps it was the fact that MB North Wales quotes fixed price servicing of £275 on their website.

I understand that the consumables are extra, but as the originally poster stated, its a diesel so new need for spark plugs. I'm still struggling to see how ATF, brake fluid and possibly a filter comes to over £225.

That's for 4yrs+

ATF change would cost approx that much on its own.

Fuel, air and brake fluid change are all around £70 each.

How much for ATF!!! that appears OTT to me.

Service plans are quoted at around £30pm (£360 pa) all in. Does this really more all in?! So I'm still struggling to understand the £500+ originally stated.

Is the service plan better value than the fixed + approach?

Does anybody have a list of the routine service items included as part of the fixed service and what is deemed as a consumable and ballpark prices.

I'm interested to know the best way forward.

Regards, Neil

Just had my CLK280 serviced- £299 all in at the main dealers (Chester)

With the best will in the world, "ballpark" prices don't really matter, what matters is what your local dealer charges. If you're near MB North Wales then you probabaly can't easily use another dealer, and that one, and the others within range, are all owned by Inchcape anyway.

Give them a call and say you're thinking of buying the car you have already ordered and ask them about servicing.

In a nutshell, the car needs alternating A & B services. Both are glorified oil changes but the pollen filter is also changed at the B service.

Brake fluid every 2 years

ATF is a one off change at 4yrs or 37,500 miles.

I *think* the air filter and fuel filters are at 4 year intervals too - not totally sure on that, and what the mileage limit is.

You can put a similar cars details in here Mercedes-Benz ESS and play around with age / mileage and see what comes up.

Thanks for reply Rory.

I am actually quite used to travelling long distances for servicing, (no Lotus specialists in N Wales and I try to avoid the main dealers) so that doesn't bother me too much. I actually quite enjoy making a day trip out of it, especially if the money saved pays for the day out.

Thanks again. It appears I need to do a bit more research.

Regards, Neil
