Great 60's Pagoda Advert

Thanks Jaymanek. Nostalgia never looked so good!

I hadn't seen that in many years - we used to be able to borrow a lot of these films on 16mm from The Mercedes-Benz film library back in the 1970s for club film nights , then MB consigned them out to a commercial company and they disappeared .

I probably still have a list of the titles somewhere - there were lots of them .

Don't get me wrong I rather like the Mr Chumley Warner commentary together with the state of the art [ for the time] technical graphics. Contrast this to the latest "b*tch*n" VW Polo advert notable for a complete lack of information on the car itself. One good reason for all you "homeboyz" out there not to buy it.

Surely most English actors of that era spoke using "the Received Pronunciation"?

Except it is clearly a German (probably Northern) speaking Received Pronunciation (with a number of Germanic giveaways). It could almost be one of the actors from Went the Day Well? in which a group of undercover Nazi Paratroopers are given away by one of them pronouncing Jarvis Cross as Yarvis Cross.

We must always be on our guard!

I also had access to German language prints of the same films which seemed to exhibit similar diction in their own langauge .

I guess its OK for the Strictly Come Dancing "demographic" ? Personally I might have warmed to it a bit more if they had put some music on the sound track.;)

170bhp from a 2.3 back in 1960 I'm impressed, but not surprised it's why Mercedes have the reputation they do, or used to anyway:rolleyes:

When i first drove my 280, I couldnt believe how it shifted... it would put most modern 2.8's to shame...

For an engine designed in the 50's, its staggering.

Unfortunately the handling is not as good as more modern cars but still way ahead of the competition at the time.. We had a MGB recently... my god, the handling was terrible, the whole car seemed to shift if going over a bump too quickly.

Figure is gross. Without alternator, water pump, or any other parasitic loss, and permitted to run without air filters or exhaust silencing. The net figure would have been quite a bit lower, but they could and did quote the gross figure back then.

Nearly there ;)
