Did you try your stealership parts dept first? Usually a good place to start and not always the most expensive ;)

Bazzle you might have read about my posts referring to this part as well - behind the dials is the AC control unit containing a PCB board and some 20+ pins and wiring harness at rear. For my 1996 C220 MB quoted $960 and according to the tech it was already cheap ... now I understand what he meant. I dont pretend to know the diffs but ours button and all look identical from the front - the initial cost is likely designing the PCB and communications into the engine bay. But now its just a restamped PCB board! Its madness the cost charged now.

Miro is in oz too and he mentioned being able to source prepaid for half that MB was asking.

I have just had my AC issue successfully rectified on Monday and I havent yet posted the results for the benefit of all. The AC control unit was suspected initially but after 6 days of testing and diagnosis - the control unit was NOT the problem. Mine is an after market AC and it turns out the control unit actually doesn;t even control the AC system at all except for using the EC button to close the circuit.

How did you diagnose the HVAC / AC Control Unit is faulty?

Left side min heat.

1. Swapped leads at Duo valve. LH vent hot RH same as left before.
Proved duo working, controlled by RH controller .
2. Swapped leads on thermisters (in SLK behind unit into heater) still no heat on left. (to see if one faulty) RH still OK
So control unit...

Opened, cleaned, resoldered, checked and cleaned potentiometers
Still min heat on left.
