help in deciding on a cl600

thanks for all the advice guys.
I know mileage shouldnt matter to an extent just my 350z has 33k on it and for some reason just going form that to a 130k car seems odd, as normally high mileage means more things to go wrong.
I am looking i think at about 11k. I do like the second link of the one posted at 8k (ish).
Most seem to have history which is good on a car like that, but would prefer something around the 60-70k mark.
Is it just that the car is expensive to maintain when needed or is it that mercedes charges that make it more, than say if i took it to my local garage??
thanks agian guys.

It's the parts and complexity that make them expensive to maintain.

Obviously a good MB specialist will be able to perform some of the work for less, but there's no getting away from the fact that these were very expensive cars new (£100k+ for a CL600 with options?), and the parts prices reflect that.

Getting back to the mileage aspect, as far as I can tell, most of the common/expensive faults associated with these cars aren't due to excessively high mileage, but can hit you at almost any time. Ie, electrical faults, corrosion and ABC issues - doesn't seem to be a mileage-specific thing to me.

What would your budget for repairs/servicing be?

Will

ive never really budgeted before for repairs, i have just either had the money to do it or not had the money. probably been lucky enough to have cars that havent developed big problems.
have had performance cars but just none wiht a mercedes badge so unaware of their cost also.

hey
can anyone in the 'know' have a look at this link and give me their thoughts please. seems like quite a good car and price (i think)
Mercedes-Benz CL 500 (CL500) on eBay (end time 04-May-10 12:14:23 BST)

I live nr brighton so this would be easy to go and view. if anyone got any similar 500's or 600's happy to hear of them if you think this is not that good.
thanks

thanks

Hi.

personally, something tells me its a little fishy.

i have no probs with upgraded badging (i have committed this crime before) but when the upgraded badging is not complimented by the rest of the car externally and is also positioned so badly, i presume (wrongly or rightly) that the car has not had an easy life and everything is not as it appears..

dunno.. just my hunch feeling :)

i,m owner of cl 600 2000 w reg.the fuel comsumption on the motor way is less than the cl 500 one.proven.do not know about the rest of the things

The thing is with a V12 CL 600 its not your everyday car.
Need to get someone who knows what they are doing.
Everything is very compact, so to get at something in a CL500 it might be done in 2 hours labour, but with the V12 Cl600 it might take 4 hours.
I cant say the engine or any other component will be more problamatic in a CL600.
Pre 2003 are no turbo so there is on less thing to go wrong, but they also have problems with coil packs etc with the cylinder cut off.

Fuel costs in my opinion are the least of your troubles. Its if something big goes wrong and you get a muppet looking at it or you go to touch your toes dealers.

That being said CL600 and CL500 price difference new is more than double the amount a cl600 costs now. Its for a reason.

I knew a bloke with a CL600, he paid £80K for it. It had a problem where it would drain the battery if he didn't use it for longer than a week. He went on holiday and left the CL600 on a trickle charge. He got a phone call from the authorities saying his house was on fire! The CL600 perished. Insurance company only paid out £15K! He was gutted! However, he's loaded and soon got himself inside an Aston Martin.

The kiss of death on the n/a V12's is the oil cooler leaks.

Was the first question I asked when looking for mine and did not go further if it had not been done.

A hugely expensive thing to go wrong (and will) that lurks in the background.

articles in the Merc enthusiast magazine on a frequent basis.
Have lots of old ones if there is a buyers guide I can post it to you!

These cars arent as bad as everyone makes out. I have just changed the oil & filter in mine (the first time ive ever done it on my own), and it took less than 30mins. I also just changed the disks and pads, took me 3 hours to do the lot, again the first time ive done it on my own. Its done over 170k and NOONE believes it, it runs like new. Mileage in these is NOT an issue if its been serviced frequently.
