Help me choose a Summer-fun classic-car

Good to hear that it's been restored. It was in pretty good condition - and regarded as one of the best in the country - even then. I remember Neil's despair after it had its little accident.

Did YAP go for good money? I presume so, to justify the restoration.

I was surprised to see that the other Lido (the one in that Auto Italia magazine article) had an asking price of just £7600.

I'm way out of touch with the market for X1/9s, but last time I looked, anything over £5k would have been considered strong. Not seen one make £7.5k since they were nearly new. However, a Lido in excellent condition is going to be at the top of the tree.

Good ones are going up in price, but still far cheaper than they should be for what they are IMO. far better than an MG or Triumph!

Barry,
I believe this is your car?

I had an X1/9, a VS i think about 15 yeas ago. It was a great little car for throwing around, but became more and more afflicted with tinworn.

I'd left it abandonded on my parnets drive for a year or so, then ended up trading it to a plumber who was doing some work on my parents house in lieu of them paying his bill.

His plan was to do it up, but i've never seen it again.

Tiff - yes, that's the one. That's a video Pete made at the garage he rents for storing his. It's away having the choke looked sorted so I can use it more readily this Summer. (fingers crossed)

Roamer - That seems to be a common tale. X1/9s got laid up after an MOT failure, but the owner's never get around to selling with them. Years later someone inherits the car somehow and has to decide whether to restore or break them. Another X1/9 club member who's local to me has rounded up 4 of them now. :D

Well, its home :)

Towed by my trusty and rusty Vauxhall Astra 1600. Its been untouched since 2005.Brakes were all seized, and the pads crumbled away when the calipers were removed. On getting it home I checked the cambelt and oil, put a fresh battery in, disconnected the coil and turned it over. Good oil pressure and sounded OK. I went to the petrol station and got a gallon of V powah. Poured it in, connected the coil and it started right up :D Its a bit lumpy and needs an oil change and a fuel system flush, but I can't believe it was so easy.

Mk1 Golf cabrio

Alfa Romeo Spyder ( Hello Mrs Robinson )

Only saw the subsequent 12 pages after I replied to your original post .

Glad you got sorted and good luck with the new car .

Mx5? don't want to shoot you down in flames... but

like many Jap cars lacks a true character in the driving dept.

Maybe an alfa spyder.... not the graduate shape, the 96 to 2006 style.

That would be my choice

How much does an X19 weigh and that trailer and how much can a Nastra tow?

Just asking as towing seems to be much more of a hot policing topic now and I could perhaps do with towing something a bit heavier than an X19...

X1/9 weighs just over 900kg's, trailer about 150?. Kerb weight of astra is 1065, so I was just about on 100%. Towed beautifully though!

The Astra's braked trailer limit is what matters (legally).

Some vehicles have a trailer limit which is more than the kerbweight, which can be OK with a low trailer (but not something high-sided with a high CG, like a caravan).

I,ve always had a hankering for one of these..............

Rare enough to turn heads, simple enough to run economically, fast enough more most situations and not too expensive to buy.
Ticks all the boxes.........

I've always fancied the Invader estate (for my imaginary colection of sporting estates):

Although I do find the styling of the Genie more appealing:

My car will legally tow more than it's own weight at 1900kg and a 320CDi will tow 2100kg.
Anyone know the typical weight of a twin wheel car trailer?

I don't, but I'd have thought more than 150 kg.

Just checked the Bateson hydraulic tilting ones.
The small one (upto 1560Kg cap) is 640Kg
medium one (2035Kg cap) is 715 kg
Large one (2670Kg cap) is 830kg.

You are going to break the limit when towing with most regular cars.

Always the s800, amazing car, cant go wrong
