Help needed, Just had an accident...

Hi again, I have recieved the estimate from mercedes brentford and apparently its over £10,000... (shocked). But the question is...

I think the car is worth around 18k , would they repair it or would they write it off?

They'll write it off.

Consider taking it to a bodyshop that charges more reasonable prices.

Andys Autobarn etc

Unless of course you want it written off, and want something else.

Thanks for the quick response, damn, I love this forum. Anyway back to the issue at hand. I decided to go to mercedes due to the roof mechanism amongst other elctrics and gadgetry in the car so I don't really want another body shop to do it.

Do they have a system for working out weather to write it off or not??

"Insurance companies use varying criteria for assessing if a car is a write-off. Most of them work on a principle that once the repair costs exceed roughly 60% of the car’s value, it is not worth repairing. However, some go as low as 50% for a write-off value. Your insurance company should be able to tell you the exact figure they use."

What's the year & mileage of your SL350?

Have you any pictures of the damaged car ?

It would be interesting to see what a £10k bump looks like.

I had mine repaired by MB Dartford, they farmed it out to Balgores who seem to do all their group bodywork. Quality is OK at best.

And what car has it as.... Mercedes-Benz SL Open 350 2dr 2006 (06) 61,000 miles Dealer £19,820 Private £18,250 Part exchange £16,455 Trade £15,845 Cost new £62,885

What figures do they use when writing the car off? , Trade, retail??

Glass Trade is a lot more than that.. around £17K. Retail is 22K.

Can't post any links because I'm on my phone, but there are a few on eBay/auto trader for £16500-19000 of similar age/mileage to the OP.

That is pre - facelift and also 80,000, that has to count for something...

But, if you like your car, and want it to go again, you should be able to get it repaired.

You need to talk to the assessor, and work through some options, including getting it away from Brentford and to a bodyshop with more realistic pricing.

How badly damaged is it, from your initial post it sounds like you drove it home?
