High mileage - no history - what's first?

Use any decent diesel specific engine oil.

If yours is a 4 speed auto (which it should be) then Dexron II ATF will be just fine.

If the filter is genuine OEM then that's Ok. You might be surprised how cheap your local MB dealer can be for parts.

Thanks, its a 5 speed manual though so presumably any decent gearbox oil is fine?
