Hi all,
Posted on hea the other day ,,,as im going to try n fix the heating issues on my clk this weekend,,,have sourced a new blower but i have been searching the web and have found brush's are a lot cheaper to replace,,,
So basically i want to know is it better/easier just to change the moter? and how can i tell if its the brush's??

Take it out and look at the brushes

Hi, When you have removed the motor you will see two silver spring clips(opposite end to fan) prise them off,and brushes will release under spring tension,if they are extremely short they are worn out, replace.

also spin motor to see if it spins freely,no binding.

thanks ,,,job for me to do tomorrow morning!!

When you do that check the commutator (the bit the brushes rub against). If that's scored or otherwise damaged then new brushes may not last that long; replacing the motor would probably be a better option (check ECP, GSF, etc. for prices).

yeh thanks mate ,,,i have sourced a moter from euro for about £80 but then i just remembered reading about brushes on hea,,so thought id ask
i am just tempted to change the moter if its easier,,,especially as im doing it myself outdoors this weekend in the cold

I replaced the brushes on our Audi and they only lasted 12 months ... don't think I'd bother again given that a new motor from GSF was only about £45.

well in not planning on keeping my merc that much longer as hopeing to upgrade to a newer clk,,,so im just looking at whats the easiest for me to do at the mo
thanks for advice mate

Brushes would probably make sense then, very cheap on eBay and not a difficult job.

Even if the commutator is damaged it can be cleaned up with emery cloth progressively getting a finer grade and then undercut between each section of the comm with something like a broken hacksaw blade, you should be looking at doing this anyway if you are replacing the brushes.

changed the heater moter over the weekend got a replacement from euro about £88 took about an hour all in all ,,,,,but now i have a warm car!!! job Done
thanks for all the advice peeps!!
