What's wrong with a spoiler?

I like it so there!;)

Me too. I liked my rear Lorinser spoiler :)

Bodykits on a Mercedes-Benz serve no useful purpose other than to *******ise the purity of the original design given to it by someone more qualified than most at being a good designer.

Its the very sort of thing that British Leyland would do to extend the life of some past its "sell by" date model on the premise that bodykits speak louder than action, louder than good taste. The sort of design effect that gets heads turned in laughter and not in admiration.

Bodykits are a car dealers nightmare. They lower the value of the car. Most buyers will imagine that the "go-faster" bodykit bedecked family saloon has been thrashed to within an inch of its life. They spoil the fuel economy, and most insurance companys will give you a bigger bill too.

Bodykits will of course get you special treatment at road junctions. You think people will let you out of a side street? You might get a bit more attention from the boy racer brigade, who most likely will think you are in fact one of their gang too.

Celebrate your Mercedes-Benz's quality and design given to it by its creator, and keep your car bodykit-free. Be proud to keep your car as its manufacturer intended it to be - original!

I quite like the little boot lip for a spoiler but the bigger ones are cool too. As long as it's not one of them Formula 1 jobs they look fine.

At the risk of being shot ;), I agree with this. Only very rarely do you see tasteful modifications. I'm not a fan of the "official" tuners' look either.

However, it's a free country and taste is something highly personal. I would not be seen dead in most of the examples seen here and elsewhere, but in the end my opinion and those of all the rest here are just that: personal opinions.

As I am in danger of being seen as too reasonable, I'll make up for it by admitting that I find it rather ludicrous when someone tarts up their slow oil burner by making it look like a track car, spoilers and very silly mirrors included :D

No offense intended here but if that were the case and the manufacturer sent your particular vehicle out of the showroom with steel wheels etc then you'd never install alloys as it's going against how the manufacturer originally intended? Either way it's still a modification any way you look at it. I've seen a new S Class with 19 inch rims on it (at least they looked like 19's, he was hitting the pedal hard), is that Barry? I'm not talking about joining the boy racers, I just really fancy a Lorinser body kit and they look rather subtle to me, as does the Wald one.

The kit posted on the first page isn't too bad, but looks more VW than MB. I agree with Pammy on this, the kit and wheels don't really match.

I think the spoiler looks ok, but not fantastic. I would save the money and go for some nice AMG wheels and lower the car a little to make it look meaner. I just see MB as a car that doesn't suit body modifications, but do suit engine and brake upgrades.

Subtle tweaks and details look good. Plenty of car manufacturers recognise that big spoilers are not the done thing now....TT, porsche etc with hidden spoilers which rise when 'needed'. Much cooler.

Actually, a prestine clean car rolling by gets plenty of looks for some reason, even if it's a pretty ordinary car....so get your cotton wool buds out and get into those nooks and crannies... as it were

I don't know why but for some reason i've never really fancied the AMG alloys. I think i'll be leaving the body kit there (at least for the time being anyway) and concentrate on getting the jobs that need doing first before I think of anything else.

Many thanks to everyone who posted their opinions, much appreciated.

Well my spoiler was already on the car so I'm not going to go fiddling with it, I don't know if it was out of the factory like it or not but I like it so it's staying! :)

Yay !!!

The pretty photo's back !! :bannana:

;)

You'd have to go back a long time to find a Merc that only came with steel wheels, for which the manufacturer hasn't provided an alloy option fitting the car.

I certainly would not fit supersized alloys - they look just silly IMHO.

Either way it's still a modification any way you look at it.

Isn't this hair splitting? I think most people understand that modifications refer to substantial alterations to the vehicle, changing its original lines and balance. To my taste even the more subtle changes don't do the original justice, but as I very clearly said, that is my personal taste. I'm entitled to it as much as the rest is entitled to theirs.

I never made any statements about what constitute "barry" or anything of the kind. I don't like the S-class with 19 inch rims, that's my personal opinion.

I can't offer you anything else but my own opinion, as is the case for any other commentator on this matter.

There is no "right" or "wrong" as far as I am concerned: it's a free country, the owner can do whatever he/she wants with their own vehicle as long as its legal and whether or not it looks good is strictly a matter of opinion.

I just really fancy a Lorinser body kit and they look rather subtle to me, as does the Wald one.

That's where we differ in opinion, to me they ruin the elegance of the original, but why would you base your decision on anything anyone else thinks about that?

I've never seen any car, ever, with an aftermarket bodykit that improves upon the original design.

IMO, they all look like cheap plastic tat designed to make the car look like something it isn't.

The best bodykits IMO are on truly fast cars with large engines, usually when people remove badges, blacken chrome trims, and install nicer interiors to make something to embarrass others at the traffic light GP. Those are the cars that impress me :)

I wasn't having a go at you my friend. If it came out that way I do appologise as that wasn't my intention.

I don't see what you would need to apologise for and I didn't think you had a go at me!

But I do like a discussion now and then :D

What ? Even this beauty ? ;)
