How do you start your car?

Why would you do that - or is it a joke?

It's the only way to stop it idling all over the place for the first 10/15 minutes of the journey. It's fine while under load, but as soon as I stop for a junction or traffic light or whatever, it ticks over horribly. I used to restart after 5 minutes of driving. But I discovered that revving it slightly while stationary and then a restart cures it to. It's odd but not car threatening so I haven't spent that much effort trying to figure out why it does it.

Elderly SLK: Just like Giantvanman, except the steering doesn't move. Start the car, remove foot from brake, put top down, put on hat and sunglasses, wait if necessary for revs to drop, reverse very slowly down drive, wait to back out of drive (I know I shouldn't but waiting for a widened drive and further improvements) while keeping eagle eyes open for pedestrian pupils for whom I always make way, such a worry, wait until car is perfectly stationary, select drive, move off. A few miles of fairly slow driving because of twisty roads in the village, get to the dual carriageway and up to 70.

Almost equally elderly Cr-V: Start car, engage reverse, back down drive, easier to see pedestrians, back out, quickly into first and off.

Always stick to the speed limits, love both cars, but I bet you will be able to guess which car is more fun...

And as far as I'm concerned of course you can ask questions to which you just want to know the answer. Thankfully no one has been harsh about my 'what is your car called' thread, call me frivolous if you like, but don't castigate me for it!

Regards, Lisa

Insert key, let steering wheel move into position, start engine, listen to radio, release foot brake, engage drive, pull away slowly, wonder why radio then cuts out and when will I book it in with comand.uk drive away slowly listening to the lovely sound of the engine when pushed slightly.

Get in, turn key, put on belt, drive off. Take it gentle first mile, then make progress as conditions permit. Seems to work for me.

Equally important is the process of stopping correctly ; particularly with a hot engine after a hard run , it is important to let the engine cool for a couple of minutes before shutting it off .

Sit down

Turn key once (Audio on)
Turn again (Full Electronics, memory seats etc)
Ignition, wait 1 min, let revs settle and suspension adjust
Pump brakes once
MSM :)

Sit down
Push the keyless go button
Wait for the steering wheel to return to my position
And go... doesn't take long for the 55k engine to warm up.

I start and stop according to the car, I stick with older cars and they all vary a bit. Unless its Italian, then I just assume its going to let go big time during the next few hours whatever happens and just get in and abuse it, shove it into 2nd gear trying not to bend the gear lever:D The funny thing is, mine have lasted much longer than the warm it up for 5 minutes brigade that cover about 3k a year!:bannana:

In Smart. Key turn fully, slam into reverse and stomp throttle in one movement taking 0.5 seconds.

In SL, sit and seatbelt, key to position 1 and wait for the seatbelt tensioning hug and lights to go on/off. Start, wait for revs to settle, select gear and tootle off.

Keyless go so press the button and duck along with shouting (fire in the hole)

It was just normal for me until recently when I decided to floor it up a steep hill and the V8 woke my 9 month old son screaming and in tears. Got told off by the wife and now I have to start the car before His Majesty gets even close. Twist n go...

Meldrew, do your trousers not subside to your ankles if you do not put on your belt until after you've got in your car??

Just a simple twist of the key till I hear/feel the V8 burst into life (the wife usually scowls at me as it burst into life, thinking I'm giving the throttle a jab), then I leave it a few seconds or so till the idle has settled below 1000 RPM, then I set off, slip it in to Drive with Comfort setting, out of my street.

Depending on the time of day,who else is in the car and if the wife is listening I adjust the amount of throttle use accordingly.

Seatbelt on, key to first position, wait till glow plugs light goes out, turn key to next position and let engine start, push brake pedal a couple of times, move gear lever to D, drive off and take it easy-ish until engine up to temp (80/90 deg, which can take a while), then drive it as I want to.
