How Long To Warm Up an Engine

A lot depends on the load you're putting the engine under. My temp gauge is barely off its stop 3 miles from home as it's all gently downhill. Then there's a fairly steep climb of about a mile and at the top of that the coolant temp will be close to normal.

mine takes about 5 miles on the motorway usually (1 mile to and 4 miles on )
the AMG has a flashing digital readout below normal operating temp which seems fairly consistent

so time wise < 5mins ?

i do tend to take it very easy ie below 3000rpm till warmed up

engine temp gets to 60-70 degrees within a few minutes then takes similar time to get to 82 i usually wait till 86 -88 till i touch the loud pedal
then it runs at a steady 102

hehe yeah about five minutes

Exactly my experience and methodology too, I will look in the morn at the oil temp when I hit the loud pedal. I know it's past 70 degrees as that's the reading at the junction when I'm waiting to pull onto the long straight and suspect 80-85 degrees. Not sure at what temp the ECU lets me have full power but it won't let me on the run to that junction which is 1-1.5 miles, but shortly after pulling out full power is available.

OK this morning I logged my warm up temperatures against time and mileage in the V70

Start temperature this morning was 3 degrees c

My journey commenced at 07:25:55

07:28:55 Total Distance travelled 1.5 miles, Total Time travelled 3 minutes, Oil temp = 68 degrees, Water Temp = 85 degrees
07:30:28 Total Distance travelled 2.7 miles, Total Time Travelled 4 minutes 33 seconds, Oil temp = 83 degrees, Water temp = 93 degrees
07:32:12 Total distance travelled 4.1 miles, Total Time Travelled 6 minutes 12 seconds, Oil temp = 97 degrees, Water Temp = 95 degrees

So from the above I consider the car to have warmed up after 2 .7 miles and approx 4.5 mins and so does the ECU as it now lets me have full power and warning light goes out. At 4.2 miles and just over 6 minutes both oil and water are at normal operating temperatures.

So as you can see no where near the 15 - 20 minutes experienced by some.

So you can see what type of drive my warm up is the video can be viewed HERE

I'll use the Audi tomorrow and check that but suspect it will be very much the same story
