How much do you pay for insurance

Me, my dad and my father in law have all been with Direct Line for 3 years as they were competitive. All 9+ NCD, no accidents or claims etc. This year, all three of us have found they are expensive, approaching double the price of the first third of comparison quotes online. We've all shifted.

OAP, clean licence, 9+ years protected NCB, CLS63 and SLK55, £1100 a year with Admiral for the pair. I tried Moneysupermarket to see if I could get it cheaper separately, and I could, but with a new firm I've never heard of (1st Central Online), but Admiral came down to within a gnat's whisker, so I stayed with them. Direct Line were hopeless, as were Saga; I don't think they like old gits driving high-performance cars, even if Saga like old gits...
When I was looking yo re-insure I found the worst people to be the NFU. Firstly they couldn't be a$ed to call you back and when you chased them they were the dearest by a very wide margin. I have now been with LVE who are for me competitive and were open to negotiation :)

Scared to ask if their name stands for “Now F**k U”? 😂

Funnily enough, National Farmers Union;)
Never insured with them due to their high pricing, but they do come high up in many lists of top insurance companies.
Aviva, direct line, Churchil have never been anywhere near competitive for me despite them claiming how cheap they are for everybody else. Go figure. Can’t understand insurance companies with logic…

IAM surety insurance (Cornmarket).
Cheapest by a bit of a way when compared to all the price comparison sites.
You don't have to be an IAM advanced driver, and if you are advanced/IAM member, and you recommend family and friends, they'll honour the discount there too.
Oh, they're nice humans on the phone too.

Age 54 , just purchased a R230 SL350 mk2 . My other car is a company car so I have zero NCB. Premium just £225 with limited mileage , I was quite and it makes the fixed costs with RFL much more palatable.

That’s great value

Churchill were the cheapest this year for both mum and me! I've moved from Direct Line, mum from Flow (which is part of LV). I renewed at £300 for Churchill Plus, which was £64 cheaper than DL's renewal quote. We've both renewed in the last week or so.

Churchill's 'basic' cover was cheaper still but the extra premium I paid was worth it to me.

Glad to hear that! At least someone is getting the cheaper quotes :) guess my area has everything to do with not being anywhere near as cheap and not getting competitive quotes from them. That being said, my c63 costs just as much to insure as M140i.

My wife's renewal for her SLK300 was £140 with LV. She decided to stay with rhem although I found a quote online at £114 !!

Funny how adding options to you policy can actually reduce the cost. This year I was speaking to my manager about driving down to see a staff member before then going onto Simply Mercedes at Beaulieu. He advised that if I was using my car to get business miles added as it would not cost a lot extra. I got the business miles added and the policy actually reduced in price. I had to pay for a mid-term change but next year it will be cheaper than if I had not increased my options.

The other thing that reduced my Insurance Premium was by adding a named additional driver. If I remeber rightly it dropped my Premium by £20/30 :)

Thanks. I might try ask for a quote based on that to see what they offer.

I phoned my insurance company this week to see if they could do a better deal on my multi car policy renewal and before offering me a loyalty discount the calls agent went through the detail of every car.

He asked about removing business cover on the first car and I explained that the flexibility was worth the small extra premium, but he asked on the next two too.

When he asked again on the fourth car I suggested that he removed it to see what the difference was. He then then said, “you’re right it’s only removed £6”.

He suggested reducing the mileage and market on each car too, and when I suggested that he try it on the fourth car, they barely made a difference too.

He didn’t bother asking thereafter. 😁

Interestingly the only real reduction was to remove my wife as named drive on the most expensive car, and that knocked £137 off a £437 premium. I declined that too.

On your last point; adding my wife reduced my premium by £35 on a £190 policy (making it £155) even though we had no intention of her using my cheap banger. Turns out she does now as it means her C200 is less likely to get banged or scrapped in certain car parks and it doesn't matter if my banger does.

I've been running some quotes as I fancy upgrading my banger Ford Ka 1.2 for something with a bit more power and have been eyeing up the Abarth version of the Fiat 500. Turns out that they'll only charge me another £20 for the next 6 months of my policy if I were to change now. £195 for a 180PS Abarth seems pretty good to me in insurance terms ( my son would be very happy with that as he pays £650 for a 1.2 Fiesta). I guess it helps being mid 50s but retired.
