How much should I offer?

Car
1993 Mercedes 320e and 2000 BMW E39 523i
Saw one of my clients today who had a W124 Saloon sitting in his garage. Upon closer inspection the car the car turned out to be an immaculate example of an E320 Sportline on a K reg, however this car was facelift version with the smaller grill. Having gone round the car there was no rust or blemishes and it was in the 2 tone green which i believe is malachite but it really was in impressive condition with the sportline badges on the bodywork and gear knob. The spec was 5 speed, green leather interior with both front seats electric, aircon, cruise, twin airbags, rear view dimming mirror, electric rear blinds, infra red locking and the lighter shade of wood (not zebrano or burr), maybe walnut. It was backed by a full service history and had a mileage off 58k as he also had a W124 convertible and estate. Now I asked him if he was willing to sell it to which he replied yes but he was looking for around £5000 which I feel is way too much however he said he would be open to sensible offers from me.
Want I want to know is ther any hints and tips to knock down the price apart from the credit crunch and what offer if you were in my shoes would you offer the car?

Might want to take a look at the engine wiring loom and ages of the tyres. Colour will count against it for resale? :o You initiated the selling scenario. Sounds under the circumstances as if you would have to pay over the odds unless he really wants to sell it.:(

Wiring loom has been changed from main dealers and tyres are about 3 months old. I didnt give him a price but explained to him to as it is a saloon 5k was a unrealistic price in todays market which he agreed but his words were that he would rather keep it then give it away! The colour is not to my taste either but it was an excellent example with a high spec.

Are you sure you can live with the Kermit interior?

I know I couldn't.

I'd point out that £5k was E55 AMG (with a decent colour/interior combination) money and ask him to have a bit of a rethink

Strikes me as not a bad price for what will be an appreciating classic if kept in its present condition .

In just a few years it will be worth more than ten-a -penny newer models that can currently be bought for the same money .

Dont agree; £5k is e320 coupe money at this mileage and condition. £3K tops for a saloon imho.

From the MB Club Gazette small ads over many months, the highest price asked for a W124 saloon was £6000, the lowest £895 and the average £2664. That covers a period from about 2004 to 2007, so adjust downwards from that.

His price is way too high, condition notwithstanding. He may be thinking of the prices in ads from the likes of Charles Ironside. He'll be lucky to get more than £2000. The colour won't help. I wonder too about the nascent classic factor; I love my W124s and am keeping them, but there were so many built and there are so many still around that the crucial scarcity factor is very weak.

Wasn't K too early for a 320 or is the car one of the very first ones built? (Or maybe it's a personal plate.)

There are 320Es (with pre-facelift grille) on a 'K' plate, but this one has infra-red locking, which was only on later E320s, and the facelift front, so could be on a private plate.

It wasnt on a private plate but one of the first facelift versions and badged as e320 not 320e. I also have a k reg 320 but it is a pre facelift hence 320e but during this transition period you will find some pre facelift versions up to L reg.
