Does anybody know how to safely remove the oily/waxy/shiny gunk that has been applied to my car's engibe cover when it had been serviced??

Its been put on so think its actually run, so looks awful, hence I want to remove it.

Just want to take it off safely and without scratching the engine cover - it looks think enough to scrape off - but I don't fancy doing that!

Any suggestions welcomed.

Have you tried taking it off and washing it with some warm suds in the kitchen sink?

Yes, have tried that - it is actually almost like a lacquer.........its really hard, so lord knows what they used.

Gunk is the nasty stuff that looks like creosote. May attack plastics. Suggest the more pleasant Comma Hyperclean engine degreasant, scrub on, rinse off. Jizer is another one.

Thanks - don't want to destroy the plastic cover........as its on an E55 - so I'm sure pretty expensive to replace! Will try and get hold of some of the comma hyperclean.

That wax is applied at the factory as a sealant. Unless it looks really bad, i would leave it on.

I don't think it was like that when it left the factory (this is the 2nd E55 I've had and the 1st one didn't have this) - so I'm sure its something thats been sprayed on recently seviced before I bought it.

Its horrible! Its been sprayed on so heavily it has runs in etc., so it has to come off...........failing that I'll end up with a new cover. Which I think is about £90

I put some gunk in a cut off plastic container used it to clean the insides of some wheels I sold.

The plastic container melted....

Clue was probably as its sold in a metal tin :)

i think jizer is the same as gunk,we used jizer on the railways for removing grease.gunk and jizer are both trade names for emulsol (i think)

Jizer is a bit nicer to use than Gunk.

But I don't like either. I've had problems with Gunk damaging plastic parts and insulation.

Hyperclean is quite pleasant to use, and relatively safe around the engine bay. It does have to be rinsed off with water. I recently had the crankshaft oilseal go when the fanbelt came off. Hyperclean cleared up the mess without too much hassle.

I put some in a Cilit Bang sprayer (itself not safe on some plastics either), one of the few sprayers that can stand up to aggressive solvents.

I spotted some new environmentally fiendly bio-degradable green-coloured Gunk in ye shoppe the other day, they must've changed formulation...
