I expected more.........

Just curious Roger, do you use the 180k that much more than you would have the E63 5.5 TT?

The reason I asked, is the E320 CDI I drive, isn't much better around town than my E63 6.2. on mpg. Obviously both big engined cars.
It's been used more recently Tom, but still reckon on under 5k miles a year.
You could be right in that most of my driving is local commute in town. Then I see anywhere from 20-27 mpg depending on how well the traffic is moving.
A couple of 70 mile round trips have given no more than 33mpg.
I will have it checked over after Xmas to see if there are any hidden faults affecting the economy.

If you are keeping the car only for a couple of years it’s not worth chasing better economy by changing cars . If it’s trouble free just keep the old girl

I wonder if it is because more of MB R&D investment went into the diesel engines and bigger v8 petrol engines over the last 20 years; leaving the smaller petrols a bit left behind.

Roger, just to check, does the car coast when you let it (ruling out a sticking caliper / brake)

I doubt it's that over this period of time, but start with the obvious....

No problem coasting Jon. I think I can rule out sticking caliper/brake pad.

My 2003 C200K returned remarkably similar figures, as does my CLS500SB (4.7 V8 TT) now (@ 24 mpg in/around town and 31 mpg on motorways). It seems that ICE engineering hasn't moved on that much over the years.

MPG.

After selling the W212 E63 and replacing it with an S204 C180K Blue Efficiency, I expected a decent gain in fuel economy. It hasn't happened.
On getting the car on Sept 3rd, it was immediately obvious the thermostat was faulty, poor mpg and inefficient heater, so changed that out for a new Wahl thermostat and the mpg rose a bit and the heater works well.
But even on a long run I'm only getting a maximum of 31/32mpg and I feel I should be in the 40+ region for a so called Blue Efficiency engine. I could squeeze 29mpg out of my 5.5l biturbo, so 31/32 out of a 1.6lt is pretty poor IMO. Around town its showing between 21 and 25mpg traffic dependant

Not sure what was done on the last service carried out by the main dealer last year, (its had an interim oil/filter change when I bought the car) but what could be causing such a poor MPG or is this what is expected from an M271 engine?
As at 50k miles with VERY gentle driving 38/40mpg no problem with a used 2012 250 Blue Efficiency SLK. Now 35mpg max with 300 SLC.

Wife has a W204 C180 Coupe (1.6 turbo petrol) and I have an E63 with M157. Around town the C180 gets about 17mpg, and the E63 is about the same . On a run, the C180 can get about 44mpg and the best I've ever had from the E63 is 33mpg.

Not sure if the C180 is thirsty or the E63 is economical!

That is a shocking economy from the C180. Mine is the supercharged Blue Efficiency version and makes 20+ around town. I can't get anywhere close to 35+ on a run.

My E63 before I sold it was pleasantly frugal with fuel on a run ( I saw 29+ on a long run once) but in town 15-08 was the norm.
I think modern engines are far more fuel efficient, even the big performance V8's. The 4.0tt can achieve 32+ on a run.

The best I managed is 35mpg, with passengers and a small luggage. Running on stock tune though on M157 😁

might be time to move back into an AMG Roger.... ;)

My wife's 1.2 Fiat 500 does nothing but urban stuff and the ODC says something like 24mpg. The Clio before returned similar mileage.

Only other thing I can think of is gearbox/transmission losses--should that vintage of transmission have a lockup torque convertor?

Any ideas which AMG you would like to go for next?
I'll try out a W205 C63S first, but feel the bigger W213 E63S will suit me more Paul.
I have a 204 right now and the space inside is somewhat limited compared to my previous W212.

This one has been tempting me for a week or so but I feel its overpriced and has too many owners in its short life. But I love the colour combination. I won't be buying black/black that is a certainty.

I gave my wife a c200K manual 203 coupe.

Around town, which is all her driving, it was shocking. 20-23 avg.

Whenever I took it on a run, and was gentle I could eek it up to 42mpg, but the run had to be at least 120+ miles.

Really odd engine, and I think the main issue is the supercharger.

Mini R53, 1.6 with an unclutched supercharger, struggles to get past 33-34 tank average.
