I hate when sellers don't know what they're selling

>Pug

We seriously dont need any infraction or points type system. If you had been around here a while you'd know why.

And yes, this forum's been running a fair while too.

Banning accounts doesn't though. ;)
Just removes the potential for future contributions (and gauging the 'value' of the contributions I've seen thus far... well, I'm sure you're a better judge than I).

On that note but veering slightly more off-topic...
You might consider updating your forum software - I think from vB 3.6.7 onwards, they introduced the 'Infractions' system.
Customisable and cumulative, you assign a value for various types of offences and under totting up, can lead to either a temporary or permanent ban.

I use it on my own forum and it's great for dealing with spammers too - just assign a 100 point limit to a permanent ban and a 30 - 50 point one for a temp ban.
10 points for minor offences (like trolling), 30 - 50 points for more serious offences, such as posting pr0n or warez and 100 points for one-hit wonder advertising spammers.

Works great - can be configured to automatically create a thread in the admin/mods section and send a message to the user in question as to why they've received the points.

PM me if you want any further advice/info on this kind of thing. I've been running my own vB forum for quite some years now. :)

The infraction sytem mentioned above has just been removed by scoobynet as it didn't work and was abused to a point it almost ruined the site.

Now I have old w202 with sand in the footwells worth 2000 grand and I am 41 years old.

Sand in the footwells is a growning problem:

Hehe, fair enough.
We only really use ours for advertising spam tbh. It's great for a one-click ban of spambot accounts.

Abused? Surely that's down to the quality of admins/moderators though.

what forum do you host then pug?

Bit quiet nowadays - I closed the business it supported back in '04 after a messy split with my ex (involving kids) took its toll.

Was getting a million hits a day (literally) at it's peak though, so I had to get pretty handy with the admin side of things.

I do miss my smileys here though, so I brought my own.

It couldnt ever have been that busy, you only have 7000 threads total and 5000 members.

Scoobynet got rid of the moderators and allowed its members to run it. It was carnage!

This site doesn't need an infraction system. I don't even think it needs mods other than to move the odd post as it's serene and very middle class ;).

Not enough traffic to appeal to the trolls or idiots. Proper merc owners only, in general.

*ahem* Check the maximum users ever online for both this place and mine... ;)

I have great moderators (that's not an insult to this place, please don't misinterpret it as so) and we encourage quality over quantity, judiciously deleting threads and/or posts as necessary (don't need the database full of crap about discount iphones/xboxes/whatever
shrug.gif
).

[edit] Plus it was a pretty niche subject - originally started as a support forum for my sole trader business. [/edit]

Ah, well you're talking about the karma system then - I disabled that.
The infraction system is something quite different.

I think you're comparing apples with oranges my friend.

Your site lists maximum ever online and ours lists number of members online TODAY....

PS. See my edit in the previous post (while you were replying, possibly), sure - apples and oranges.

OK, good point well put Pug.. but how does that explain so few threads?

Does this example of one of said threads help?

^^ that's from the private section of the forum too, fwiw. :p
[edit]... and my last post in it was to lock it and start a new one on the same subject. The database was beginning to groan a bit![/edit]

To expand on what I said in my previous edit -
I used to run an online store (on my tod) selling specialist German PC watercooling and performance equipment, a pretty niche market compared to MB, no?

The forum was originally started to cater to the fact that I was forever answering the same questions by email, so I started the forum so I'd only have to answer once.
It was originally running IPB, so we lost a chunk of stuff when we migrated to vB (but it was worth it, in the long run).

The business hasn't been operative since 2004 but there's so much heart and soul still there that I don't want to shut it down.
It got to the point once, when I was temporarily homeless after my split that the hosting was due for renewal, so my members actually clubbed together and paid the fees in my absence.

Anyway... just offering the benefit of my expertise here. I also run a dev version of vBulletin on one of my home PCs for experimental purposes, so I'm pretty familiar with the workings of it.
Glad if I can help whenever it's warranted.

Looks like a W210 once its rusted away :D

Assuming MS500 does actually own a Merc (i assume he does).... and he can get over whatever has ruffled his feathers, he could be a good contriubutor to the site.... i think i remember some good posts from him? i could be wrong though (must check!)

EDIT: Just checked - all the threads started by him seem to be fine, normal threads. I also remember him contrubuting well to other's threads.

I also think that some of the comments made to him are pretty poor. OK, i know he set himself up for a fall, but some of the comments by certain members were a bit OTT to be honest. Just my opinion!

So you don't know ms500 then Pug?
Can't say I do... not from the screen name anyway.
Just making observations based on the limited time I've been here.

Know of Will and a few others though, having seen their contributions on other sites.
Pretty sure they're unlikely to have an 'agenda' against someone for the reasons given.

Glad to defer to your judgement on the subject but wouldn't want you to miss out on the nifty goodness that's been introduced with the latest vB for the sake of not knowing about it, that's all.

Have to say Pug you're taking Spike's usual aggression quite well. Personally I think your experience would be of use.

Cheers mate. As I say, glad to help where I can and I can handle measured aggression much more easily than direct unfounded insults. ;)
I rarely take a strong stance on anything without knowledge of facts to back it up and will concede fair points when they're made.

I believe discussion forums are a great medium when they're underpinned by valuable contributions and that a clear signal:noise ratio shout be maintained wherever possible.
There's always room for off-topic but poo-flinging? Nah. ...Well, not too much anyway. :D

LOL

Do I really come across as being agressive? :o

In reality I'm soft and fluffy - honest. :)

It's all in the name, I think.
