Driving home last night I was on a dual carriageway approaching the M62 junction in Huddersfield. The lanes are pretty narrow and there are always loads of parked cars with just a wheel left on the road in the left lane. I was on the left with a car in front of me and a truck in front of him, there were some cars a little further back behind me.
The truck started to slow and I got the impression he was about to stop for some reason so I indicated and pulled out, lifting off the gas pedal because I expected the guy in front to do the same. He sat there for a second then realised what was happening and the truck slowed more so the guy put his indicator on. I was already leaving a gap for him so I just flashed my headlights and let him out, by this time I've shed about 10-15mph because my foot's off the gas to keep the gap big enough to let a car out.
He pulls out and then I hear the sound of tyres dragging along tarmac as the guy who *was* miles behind me is now basically in my boot because he must have been in some kind of dreamworld and hadn't realised that I was slowing a little, he braked way too late and skidded. I braced myself for another shunt but it never happened, thank God! I just carried on and sped back up again, leaving the guy behind me (in a Frontera or something) stationary in the middle of the road with a small queue of cars forming behind him. He must have been a lot more shocked than me, I'm pretty desensitised now!
You'd think with it getting dark and the weather being rainy/icy/snowy etc that people would try to pay more attention and keep their eyes on the road etc!
Safe motoring everyone!
