I have always been very well received by our American cousins on trips to the USA - always made to feel welcome - it's a great place and relations have never been better. The Oil spill could have happened to any company - it's just one of those things.

Anyway - how the hell did we get to this from "tyre pressures?"

I am more than a little sick of American supremacy where the truth is that without British and European technology the furthest forward you would be is having hitched your plough to the back of a Model T, you wouldn't have to feed the horses of an evening.

And frankly your desire to mouth off your platitudes then only show interest in our material possessions is indicative of belonging to a country whose high culture is consumerism.

Do you even own a vehicle, let alone a Merc...????

Have you ever visited the USA...perhaps if you have and lived there you'll understand why small cars don't sell...

The top selling vehicle in the USA are pick up trucks....
Why?
Because they are utilitarian.

Can you grasp the basic concept that a country with an area of 3.79M square miles and a population of 309M has different needs then one of about 100M square miles and with a populace of about 60M?

This is a very big country and small cars just won't do it...

I'm still treating you with respect, but probably because I don't suffer from low self esteem...

Explain to me why the taxes on petrol are so high?
How can the USA have such low energy taxes...
In fact why are all the UK taxes so high..congestion charges, VAT, et al ???
What does the average Brit get with paying high taxes that we lack in the USA ?
Why does the USA have a per capita income that is 50% higher then the UK ?
Guess it's all smoke and mirrors and lies that we learned during the cold war as you stated.
What is wrong with consumerism...
Don't you own anything or desire to do so?

Things are changing in the USA and not for the better.
Hopefully the 2010 elections will reverse the progressive trend which has failed in the UK and EEC.
Americans are motivated by opportunity through hard work...
Work hard and you succeed...
Have you no desire to provide the best you can for your family and be a productive member of society ?

Because I'm successful, I can afford them and they are my passion.
There are many on the UK forum who own as many Mercs as I do...
Is it a problem owning what you can afford..
Or should one be penalized for working ( and still working ) hard for almost fifty years.

I don't criticize the lifestyle of others...
It takes a certain mindset to be envious of accomplishment..

Not directed toward you as I know nothing about you...
More toward the members of society who "take" without being productive...

Hence the reason why the tax rates are so high in the UK and EEC
