I'm really posting this for my parents, who own a 1999 E240 Estate - but I can't quite see them getting into internet forums, even if I pointed them here!
At around 30,000 miles, the E240 just failed its MOT, due to a cracked or leaking steering rack - as far as I can tell from talking to them. I am far away in the US so can't help much directly, but if possible I would like to find them a good independant Mercedes specialist so they aren't dependent on the dealer. They live in North Wales and anywhere in the Wrexham-Mold-Chester vicinity would be nearby.
The dealer gave them a quote of 2000 pounds for the steering rack - I think that's just for the part, as it seems in line with my quick check at a US online parts store (www.ips-parts.com - $2770 list, $1300 their price, though I have no idea what the "parameter steering" option means). Mercedes in Maastricht have offered to split this 50% with them, which might be fairly generous, or might fit comfortably into their parts markup - I don't know! Still think a good independant would be a good find for them. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks!
Graham
