I have always known that the Germans have a sense of humour. The Mercedes badge system is witness to this. I have read on this forum the various views on re-badged and de-badged cars and can understand many of the views expressed.
The system starts simply enough by stating the car type A, B etc. Except that we seem to have missed out a D series, but then it gets much more complicated and we have things like ML (Massive lorry?) for the 4x4 range.
Then there is a number which gives a very rough idea as to the capacity in cc of the engine. This assumes, of course, that you have multiplied it by 10 unless you are an AMG owner who have to multiply by 100….
But then again 280 and 320 diesels seem to both have 3 litre engines.
If you have an atmo petrol engine then you don’t seem to get any other badges, but if you have a supercharger or a diesel then Mercedes seem to feel that needs another badge on the right.
Having a diesel, I have grown tired of promoting Charles David Ingram (or whoever) on the back of my car, so I have replaced the CDI badge with my own initials.
This is done with official Mercedes parts (just type ‘Mercedes badges’ into eBay). I think this much improves the car (!) but more importantly maintains the Mercedes badging tradition of being almost completely unintelligible to non-Benzers!
Nifty of naff, I’m sure you’ll comment!
