Installing aftermarket head unit on W208 1999 CLK? Wiring harness/adaptor?

CLK 230K W208 Coupe (1999)(Auto)
My Audio 10 unit is faulty...(there is no signal being sent to the CD player, I have check the rear of the Audio 10 and there is not red light, so i think the fibre optic part of the HU has died)

I tried to install a Sony stereo. I got the Audio 10 out fine, but on going to connect the aftermarket unit there were three adaptor type plugs from the car - but only 2 adaptor type sockets on the Sony aftermarket unit.

Is there a wiring harness i need?

I've looked online but couldn't find one for my car.

The 3rd plug (the 'C' plug) has
a) Power to the CD changer from head unit
b) Fibre optic wakeup (to wakeup CD changer, phone, voice recognition if there)
c) CANbus network - this is how the Audio 10 knows where the lights are on, ignition on, steering wheel comands, and displays info on the cluster
d) On ML the reversing signal (used for satnav units)

So you don't need those for an aftermarket head unit. However an aftermarket headunit will need switched power, lighting signal etc which may well not be there on the car's 'A' plug. ('B' plug is the speakers)

[EDIT]If the CLK does not have steering wheel controls, it wont have CANbus and will have the wiring on the A plug. I cant remember when CLK was facelifted to include steering wheel controls, I think it was mid 1999.

Thanks Richard.

So I need to get power to it somehow? Is there no adaptor, that I could just plug in, that would leave those wires that weren't needed redundant and just connect the others?

(FYI - I didn't count the fibre optic wire that would be the fourth)

you could just wire the power to it from the cigarette lighter socket (which is 12v ignition) that sits just below the radio. Probably the easiest way on a facelift CLK and ignore the usual ign power from the radio loom.

assuming you got a standard ISO block with your new radio - just tap the correct wires into the wires on your car.

hope this helps.

Thanks,

I've got to say i reckon that is a bit beyond me. I've no diagram, and wouldn't wnat to go messing. So I might have to get a fitter to do it

Slightly annoying, as i thought it would be a simple job, like i'd done on Fords and Saabs.

I do have steering wheel controls.

Okay, then your CLK was manufactured from August 1999 onwards.

If you can post a couple of pictures of the rear of the Sony then we can help a bit more. If the Sony takes standard ISO connections then connectors A and B should plug straight in and the C plug becomes redundant.

If it helps I have a Mercedes audio10 Cd head unit you can have for the price of postage. You would need to get it coded though as I dont have the code for it! But at least you would still be able to use your CD changer and steering wheel controls/instrument cluster.

PM me if interested.

Thanks Alfie.

Won't be home for a few days, so won't be able to grab any pics but it is as you have stated. I'm sure the Sony takes standard ISO (it was bought in 2003) and what i thought on looking at the wires.

A & B plugged in and C was redundant.

I'm just hoping there isn't anything wrong with the Sony :(

Interested in the Audio 10 and will PM.

Correct! you will need to wire a permenant live supply wire to the Sony unit

Sounds like a job for a pro...unless someone doesn't mind talking me through it?

I'll also get some picture up here soon.

Actually, the Mercedes A connector will have a permanent live - it may not have a switched live or a "lights on" feed.

Also, some cars/stereos ISO connectors have the switched live and permanent live pins swopped compared to other cars/stereo manafacturers. Wont break anything but means the units wont turn on when car is off, or forget their memories.

Sony do have the perm/switched feeds reversed but they normally fit a plug/socket to these so that they can be changed if required. The only other thing you should need is an aerial adapter to convert the small MB connection to a standard one.

As for switched power, just take a feed from the rear of the cigarette lighter socket
