Insurance is a JOKE

SL500 2004 £300 ish last year for me
This year £320 for me(51) £570 for my 76 year old dad 0 NCD available to use both have clean licences seems abit silly to me ,we live within 500m of each other
Ages and occupations will be different, postcode could be different.
Retired peoples pattern of car use can be very different from somebody whose car is parked all day whilst they are at work.
Fewer insurers will quote for 76 year olds as new business, so those that do quote are likely to offer higher quotes (for various reasons, such as spread of risk Etc.).
I don't know if it's still the case, but previously the number of insurers that would offer new business quotes for car insurance for people over 80 years of age was rather limited.
Young people keep saying that older people should have to take regular driving tests, and that they should pay equally for insurance - But not when they have an older relative who drives.

Fwiw I'm a firm advocate for compulsory periodical re-tests for ALL drivers ( all driving licences would expire every "X" years unless the periodical test is passed).

However, imho, the standards of driving that I see daily that would preclude any hope of passing that assessment appears as prevalent in all age groups these days.?

Haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned already, but regarding the insurance costs on certain brands, eg Range Rover, a quick look at the crime statistics helps show why some marques are so much more expensive.

I had a look on the Copart website, at the list of cars for sale recorded as recovered / stolen, it soon became very obvious that Range Rover and BMW are the naughty person's cars of choice.

Actually, regardless of anything else, it's a very interesting website, seeing the marques of cars, and their values, that have been written off for various reasons.

I hear that some insurance companies will not insure Range Rovers in London any more.

I also read that due to the high levels of theft....I wonder how owners will manage without their 2.5 tonne trucks and there superb off road ability in CENTRAL LONDON....If they have to buy an actual car to replace it , it could make bumping up on the kerb to use the cashpoint a far more risky affair!!

I actually use mine for work and a tow vehical not many car's will actually tow a buccaneer legally and so glad i dont live in london £500 FC insurance just the £700 VED which winds me up but that's a different story

Is there much precedent for these figures to come down any time soon, or is this ~50% hike likely to be the new normal, much like with fuel and (to some degree) VED?

It's certainly on the rise.
I'm doing the annual trawl the comparison sites after seeing the renewal on my shed leap from £265 last year to £355 if I renew next month. Currently with 1st Central.
Best quote so far is £297 but still looking.

I thought I'd visit A-Plan brokers today seeing its been recommended for modified cars in the past at reasonable rates.
Pretty shocked to hear the best they could do would be over £500. Madness, when I was in a 650+horse power E63 this time last year and paying a touch over £300 for the pleasure. This C180 is only a small step up from a lawnmower in power and I'm being quoted silly money for insuring it. I'll eventually have to bite the bullet and have my pants pulled down and pay what I consider far too much for a mundane performing and cheap car.
It could be worse though. I don't have an Ilford postcode.;)

To be fair though insurance is far, far cheaper in real terms than it was decades ago. I suspect there will be huge increases in premiums over the next few years as the recent entrants into the market realise that unrealistically low premiums are unsustainable.

Well my renewal in last year £420 for my c320 renewal today want £1400 , Are they off their rockers.
Coming upto 60yrs young over 30yrs no incident`s but can only put 9+yrs which is a con used to be allow how many you have but all my last renewals have only shown 9+yrs on it.
Did say would you like to renew your policy only yes or no button`s no option to say what you think ( wonder why )
Done comp meerkat got quotes around £500 so going to check companys who dont use comparison sites

New regulations have said that insurers can't charge existing customers more than new customers. So all insurers are now charging everyone top whack. Once again, regulations back firing.

Some of the guys on other forums are saying the quotes coming through over the last couple of weeks have been horrific.

I know a few people with declared modifications are really struggling with renewals and even a few with standard cars are considering ditching them due to ridiculous premiums.

That regulation came into force over 18 months ago (in January 2022) - Anybody with continuous insurance on the same vehicle will have already had at least one renewal since that time.

Maybe the general rise in premiums is due to more road users knowing and demanding their rights, rather than thinking about their responsibility to avoid accidents and/or mitigate their losses.

Your grandaughter’s is a great price, is it the original A 45 or the current A 45 S? I do like those.

While my Daughter was learning to drive we bought her a Vauxhall Corsa E. Back in March this year I got some dummy quotes trying to get an idea of what to expect when she had her full fat licence. Hearing quoted prices of other young drivers I was somewhat happy with the £1,260 quoted.
A couple of days ago she passed her test and upon trawling the comparison sites and other insurance providers that aren't on comparison sites the best I could find was £2,475.
I make that an increase of 96% in the space of 5 months. Jaw drop emoji, overtime booked at work. How on earth are some people supposed to afford these types of premiums. Without help from Dad, she would never be able to put her car on the road.

I think it may be AMG line at that price, or an A35?
