Hi all

Im with CHurchill and did a quote for a W209 clk270cdi (looking too buy one), but they wont insure me against theft unless I can prove it has a tracker.

Why do they need a tracker?

Hi and welcome......where do you live? Have you tried other insurers?

Moneysavingexpert says if you did a search on Moneysupermarket, Confused, CompareTheMarket, Uswitch, TescoCompare and GoCompare, they reckon you would have covered 100% of all UK insurers.

Then you would have given yourself the best chance of finding the best quote.

My CLK350 didn't need a Tracker to insure, not even a CLK55.

It will take you some time but I'm sure it'll save you money.

First Ive heard of that one...very odd.

When I had a quote awhile ago with DirectLine for a Subaru WRX STi they insisted a tracker was fitted also (again, for theft)

Oh, welcome b21 by the way, how rude of me not to say Hi; I'm impressed by the gap between your join date and this first post

I`ve got to agree, its only churchill that require a tracker on a clk w209, I had the same two years agp.

...So I switched to esure. now even cheaper premium and no tracker

Hi all

Thanks for all the replies.

I cant change insurers just yet as ive got 3yrs ncb and policy expires end June, so have to stick with them.

Next policy I get to look around more as i'll have 4yrs.

I have had the SL with Direct Line for over 5 years now, and in that time it has had a couple of "incidents".

Every time Direct line have been nothing short of outstanding, despite being T-boned last week I do not actually fear the assessor coming round to see it again for the second time in the space of 3 weeks.

Obviously I may change my attitude after his visit next week - but somehow I just know its going to be OK with them :)

I dont actually know if the insurance would be cheaper anywhere else as the quote they gave seemed reasonable, the service they have provided to date has been exemplary, so I never bothered to look if anyone else was any cheaper :D

Of course, insurers assess risk based upon a number of factors. Including postcode, B21(?) ;)

A tracker is pretty much mandatory to get insurance on a Scooby, as they do get stolen with depressing regularity. My last one had the tracker and two immobilisers, as the insurance company wouldn't accept the factory fitted one - it wasn't Thatcham Cat 2. I had to get an aftermarket one fitted. Starting that car was a convoluted procedure, to put it mildly - and I knew what I was doing and had all the keys and tokens. Plus it was kept in a locked garage - short of keeping a hungry Rottweiler in the back, it couldn't have had more security. I figured if anyone managed to actually steal it, they'd deserve to keep it!

Cheers,

Gaz

I had a very similar attitude to you regarding DL, Mark. When I got my Volvo, a year or so back, I shopped around, and saved over £700 on the combined premium that DL wanted.

My loyalty evaporated pretty quickly after that. And then it took me nearly five months to get a correct refund out of DL for the unused part of my premium.

'NCB' shouldn't be a factor on deciding whether or not to to look around. Insurers will quite happily quote you regardless as long as you don't have any nasty negative ticks in the box.

The only complication in looking around is a claim (fault or no fault) that hasn't been closed.

Are you sure you didn't ask for the Pay as You Drive insurance?

It involves the insurance company putting a GPS tracker on your car, but I understand it is only mainly used for younger drivers (such as myself, and no I don't have the PAYD tracker :))

Sorry to hear that - however the premium on my SL is considerably less than your saving ;)
Any quote for an SL parked on the street coming in under £500 with full protected NCB was going to be alright by me.
