hi folks, i drive a 2007 e class 320 cdi and it has a audio 50 system installed, ie small screen but with sat nav, traffic etc, in the glove box there is a ipod connection hardwired in plus a black felt tray for an ipod to sit in so i went and bought a ipod nano but went i connected it the ipod screen said "unable to charge this accessery ok to disconnect" with a merc star icon above it, i also tried two other ipods off friends but same result, there is no other jack point in the car plus there is no aux button/option on the audio system but one of my friends ipods started charging when it was connected, is this just a charging point or a fully flegged audio connection, anybody??????? thanks, stewart

The current MB iPod kit for E / CLS (and the one for A/B/C/GL/ML/R, and probably others) cant charge the latest generation iPods. This is because apple suddenly dropped the ability to charge those iPods at 12v via the 'firewire' pins on the iPod, only now chargable via the USB 5 volt pins.
MB is meant to be releasing a fix (which I presume is a new cable with a little charging circuit in it).

I didnt realise the Audio-50 on CLS actually had aux in (Audio-20 on CLS doesnt) - you need to work out how to select AUX in on the Audio-50-APS

thanks richard, so this is just a charging point or a audio connection? i thought connecting an ipod would overide the whole system and just play it, no?????????? as i said there is no aux option on audio 50 just fm,am,cd, seems odd fitting a car with just a charger for an ipod and not a audio system connection.

Send us a photo of the connection. (and PM me your chassis number)

I've checked the MB docs and Audio-50 does not support the iPod kit - so its strange that someone fitted it. Unless is a non Merc iPod kit, and then it pretends to be a CD changer

Given the 2nd possiblity, i'd plug in an iPod and select CD and see what happens

i recently had a retro ipod connection fitted by bmw into the existing stereo which does not charge an ipod touch and it is an absolute pain i cant use the cd unit as the ipod uses the cd mode

I bought one of those plug in FM transmitter thingies for the wifes ipod nano 4th gen and it would not charge but it charges my 120Gb clasic. I've got that one now and she has a Belkin at three times the price but that one does charge the nano. So I think Apple need to get their act together and decide what charging system to use.

Cheers.

Peter

Try pressing and holding the CDC or CD button for a few seconds. This may well select the ipod if its fitted.

As Richard says, send the chassis number and all will be revealed.

As for charging; Apple changed the charging voltage on the newer ipod (and iphone) so some are 12V and others 5V . There is a new ipod kit coming that will resolve this issue.:thumb:

chassis number is wdb2110222b114384 tryed all those things ie holding cd button down but still no joy, the ipod goes on to pause when connected and does nothing when any buttons are pressed on it, funning thing though, today ipod screen said "accessary connected, ok to disconnect" but still no joy, this car was brand new from mb dealer so nobody as fitted this as after market, it has a quite thick black wire and has a white ipod only connection at the end and fed though the glove box wall and is very neat and tidy

also this car came direct from md dealer brand new so its not an after market jobby, the wire is black and quite thick and has a white apple ipod connection on the end also it feeds direct though the glove box wall inside and is very neat and tidy

My car sounds like it is similar to your installation. The manual states that the only way to work an iPod is by using the steering wheel controls once the in-dash display is set to Audio. Have you tried that?.

Where are you located? Suspect its birmingham?

Happy to look at it for you if you come down to Woking.

Interesting, car definely has Audio-50-APS factory fit (according to data card, and the OP says its direct from MB dealer brand new) The Merc iPod kit (and that sounds like it) is given your descirpton of the connector) is always fitted by dealer (or an independant !!) - i.e not at the factory.

I assume you have had it from new, I suspect the dealer installed it and then didnt know where to connect the ipod kit audio output because the audio-50-aps (according to MB document) doesnt have an AUX in.

- But if they do that they normally charge arm and a leg.

Why not go back to the dealer and get them to sort it out, if they fitted it?

I presume you have checked the 'hold' switch on the ipod itself?

dealer 250 miles from me and i have checked the hold button, we admitting defeat this time guys????? thanks for your intrest and posts by the way

Just a thought guys - does the car have the phone enabled - whether or not the car phone kit is present, because I believe that is what is needed to make the steering wheel phone buttons active?

Stewart

Have you tried MB Customer Services?

They can access the HO audio technical dept and would be worth a try before giving up.

I take you have tried a (good) local ICE business

I'm happy to take a (no charge) look at it for you and try other ipods and ipod controllers if you want to pop down to Woking. I bet we would find the problem.
