I'd argue the super>hyper leap is all about performance, not price (albeit the 2 are of course linked).
I think you could almost keep "hypercar" an invite-only list, off the top of my head:
* Veyron
* Carrera GT
* Enzo
* CCX?
* F1
A bog standard 360 Modena is a supercar, yet only bests my (relatively) cheap-ass Golf by 13bhp/tonne - a hypercar would be a 200bhp/tonne difference, warp factor 10-capable kinda car
Agree with all the above. I'd love a C63 or C55, but ultimately it's still just a C Class.
I've seen it said a few times the AMG C Class' are more of a muscle car than anything else, I'm quite happy with that characterisation - mass produced saloon with something special hidden in it and a V8 soundtrack...
Yep. I buy that. MB are masters at what the US market used to 'own' for themselves: "muscle cars" or "hot rods". Mainstream production cars with engines and power outputs much larger than is actually required, and subtley uprated elsewhere. What we might call a supersaloon.
RUF and Porsche is another interesting one. To me, the mainstay of the Porsche 911 is the Carrera - not the homologation specials, or aftermarket tuners - and the Carrera whilst fast, is a sports car, not a super car. Whether MB or someone else, they just uprate it as AMG do saloons, and probably create what we might call a supersports.
The supercar tag is applied at release and then stays with the car. A 70's supercar is still a supercar, even though there are now saloons that could leave them for dust.
Another criteria for a supercar is that it must resemble sorts of cars that children under the age of 14 but over the age of 6 are best at. Too young and they draw 3 box saloons, ie AMGs.
A supercar...is something every little boy has as a poster on his bedroom wall and although the C63s etc are no doubt brilliant performers they just do not cut the mustard in terms of exotic looks. In that sense then...they are ultimately just a C class. No offence intended...just a simple truth.
So now that I have a poster up on my bedroom wall of my C63 it is now officially a supercar....:bannana::bannana::bannana:
Come to think of it I have one of the ML too!!!! now I'm confused...
Ah well who gives a dam! I love em ......
M.
A supercar should be entirely impractical and pointless for anything other than driving at absurd speeds.
You should not be able to manoeuvre it through a multistory car park...but if you can, then the doors open in such a way that you couldn't get out anyway.
Driving it should be an event, a pantomime if you will. People must stand, point and stare as you drive down the road. Small children will be beside themselves and jump up and down.
You must be required to plan your journeys via fuel stations as the fuel consumption is so absurd.
It must be extremely difficult to get in and out of, absolutely no chance of a "Lady" entering or exiting the vehicle without a Sharon Stone moment.
It must be so expensive as to be vulgar, making the act of owning/driving bordering on being a c0ck.
I'll add as I think of more parameters.
