Issues with Police BMWs

Why BMW's in the first place? Didn't have Plods down as brand snobs.

Wouldn't touch any BMW from the last 10 years tbh.

Because they probably don't want to be driving a traffic/pursuit car made by someone like Peugeot or Ford (if either company made something powerful enough - which they don't), that falls to bits at the mere hint of extended abuse at high speed or otherwise.

So they use a brilliant (not) BMW which is what kicked off this entire thread.

I suspect that the propensity for engine fires wasn’t known for some considerable time (aren’t the affected vehicles a bit long in the tooth now?), so would not have featured in the evaluation process.

What is disgraceful is that BMW don’t take responsibility for the issue. Blaming “unique usage patterns” (that they would have been well aware of) and sloping shoulders instead of stepping up with a solution isn’t clever.

Not saying they don't have their faults, all cars have their faults, even our beloved Mercedes have their fair share. But, Peugeot and Ford are two examples of cars with more than most, Peugeot in particular. Cars built to a budget and it many cases, it shows.

Strange that you think Ford and Peugeot don't make decent long lasting cars, nip down to your local taxi rank and see how many cars are Ford or Peugeot compared to how many are BMW, all doing high mileages 😁

And I am (was) looking to buy a new X5 40i Hmmm???

Strange that you think they do - are you in some alternate universe? They absolutely do not make long lasting cars. I've had (bitter) personal experience with both brands and would never, ever spend my money and one of their cars ever again.

99% of the taxi's in my local ranks are hybrid Toyotas or diesel VW's, even the odd E class, which is a common theme I see in a lot of cities.

Ford are marginally better I suppose, but there's a very good reason you don't see lots of old Peugeots (or any French cars) kicking about the roads in this country, thats because they're absolutely sh*t.

I can’t imagine any Peougeot, Renault or Fiat being used as a heavyweight Police pursuit vehicle but I can see a Ford Mondeo estate doing that job. I think that Ford aren’t making them anymore though.

I’m sure I’ve seen Police Volvos. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Bring back the Vauxhall Omega I say !!! Jam Sandwich paint job 'n all
Or even better the Rover 800! I think the Police nicknamed them the Belgrano on account of their wallowy handling! I did read somewhere that the Police in Aberdeen had a lightened Rover SD1 so they could catch oil money crims in their fast cars.

I have to generally agree about French cars, ive never been too impressed. However my old Mondeo Mk4 i hate to admit was much better engineered than my current E. Not as special for sure, but much more reliable. I think the Police did use the older St220 at one point?

Yes i've seen plenty of Volvo plod mobiles around - mainly V90s.

Highways Agency also have some XC90s around too.

It may seem unbelievable to some (judging by comments above), but the police in France seem to use Peugeot products quite successfully for motorway patrols. Similarly, the Italians use Lancia (Fiat) and the Spanish use SEAT.

I accept that the UK is unique in that company in that we have only Jaguar as a producer of large, fast, cars and they are a “premium brand” but lots of other countries seem to manage quite well using more mundane products. I wonder why we (think we) can’t?

My lad - when was a tech at the local BMW dealer - said that they always had a couple of X5 engines crated up and ready to install as they came in on a regular basis...

Sadly, from my time consulting with OEMs, it choice of car for forces is normally determined by the discount that manufacturers will give. They'll have a set of requirements that they put out to tender, looks like BMW like buying in the business.
