JAG XJ6 4.0 sport

Get an SL500 instead ;)

It does not matter who now owns them a Jaguar XJ (not so sure on the new one) and any Aston Martin are the last of the truly class cars.

I'm a little late to this thread but having owned both an 8 Series BMW & an X300 XJR I can give my two penneth.

An 850Ci in my mind will NEVER be an appreciating classic. The 5 litre V12 engine was underpowered & thirsty. If you want an 8 series to keep then it either needs to be;
  • one of the last of the line 840's with the 4.4 litre engine and 5 speed steptronic gearbox - (NOT the earlier 4 litre cars without steptronic)
or;
  • 850CSi - this had a motorsport 5.6 litre engine and only came with a manual gearbox & is pretty rare
With regard to the X300 XJR mechanically they're pretty robust having the supercharged version of the AJ16 engine which features coilpack technology. I've got a 1995 XJS with 168k on the clock which has an AJ16 & its a great unit.

The gearbox on this model of XJR was known to have slightly suspect electronics which could lead to some very severe gearchanges, but they still seem to last pretty well - funnilly enough this gearbox is a Mercedes item.

Build quality isn't brilliant, but providing the car has been looked after there's no major worries although some of the interior electirics can play up.

My only other gripe was the single wiper which was usless in anything above a shower - as far as I remember it wasn't anywhere near as advanced as that articulated offering Mercedes fitted to their cars at the time.

Above all though, it was fun to drive - 0-60 was ok, but the real power shows for the mid range overtaking. As I recall the offical jag figures from 50-70, 70-90etc.... were half those of the non supercharged cars.

Thanks for the input folks I have a few cash offers aswell maybe just take the money and buy another merc
