Hello all

I hope I’m posting this in the right place as it is my first post on the forum.

This is the first time I have owned a Mercedes since 1980 - when I had a 1965? 220S.

Many cars have gone through my hands since then and for the last 4 years I have been driving a 1990 Granada Scorpio 12v which has now seen better days despite having had over £3000 worth of repairs since I have owned it.

For the last 2 weeks I have been looking for a suitable car to replace it with. I like the look of the C class and wanted a rear wheel drive car which would have good performace and handling. There was no way I would look at BMW (a story I may tell later) so really it had to be the Mercedes.

I went and looked at quite a few C280's registered between 1994 and 1996, and priced between £2000 to £2750 but many weren't worth a second look for various reasons including rust, very high mileage & bad oil leaks et al.

On Wednesday I found a 1994 C280 Esprit at a local car dealer advertised at £2495. I took it our for a drive and it seemed fairly quiet and smooth compared with the other ones I had driven, and the 84000 recorded mileage seemed to tally with the service book. The bodywork seemed to be in excellent condition and was finished in Imperial red. After a bit of negotiation I paid £2000 for it and picked it up yesterday with a years MOT on it.

I don't really know what to expect from it but after driving about 100 miles today I think that there may be one or two things awry. The handling is a bit twitchy and at times vague needing a bit of correction here and there on camber changes and there seems to be a little play in the straight ahead position. I also find the car turns in very quickly. The tyres are Goodyear Eagles - Is it right that they should be 33psi front and 36psi rear?

The brake pedal also seems to have quite a long travel compared to the other cars I have driven but they do seem to pull the car up well. I noticed that there was an advisory on the MOT that the rear pads are getting low and wondered if it could be this? If it is - is it an easy job to do?

The other thing I noticed was that under hard acceleration the gearbox does seem to whine rather although probably no more than the others I have driven and is not exactly loud so assume this is normal but please correct me if I am wrong.

I am sincerely hoping I have not bought a lemon! as apart from these niggles I am very pleased with this car and I hope to enjoy many miles in it.

Any comments appreciated.

Ps Hope to put some pics up soon

congratulations & welcome:)

shocks may be worn and worth checking
worth changing the gearbox + diff oil

Welcome to the forum!!

With regards to the twitchiness and turn-in maybe a four-wheel alignment and geometery check might be a good start. Won't be cheap, but probably necessary if it's never been done.

Same with gearbox/diff oil, if it's not be done, it would be worthwhile doing even if it doesn't fix the whine, as Willy suggests.

Whining may also be the auxillary belt that can whine apparenetly under load.

I notice you're in Berkshire - I'm sure a fellow member might be able to suggest a specialist in your area if you'd prefer someone else to take a look. Maybe a ride to see fellow member BlackC55 would be a good move, and not too far away?

The correct values are listed on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

Enjoy the new toy :).

Hi and welcome,

You've bought a nice sounding car at a good price. Fortunately most repairs and maintenance should be quite reasonably priced for this model too, so once it's had a quick going through it should provide you with plenty of miles of happy motoring.

I'd be looking to check (change!) the steering damper and front ball joints if they haven't been done very recently. Ball joints are about £20 each and the steering damper similar. Both very quick and easy jobs, and a common weakness on the W202 cars. Also check the wheel bearings for free play on the front. Obviously worth checking as much as possible and the consider getting an alignment done as BD mentions too.

Definately get the rear pads replaced (if not done already), and check the discs front/rear too, they are surprisingly cheap from the main dealer, then I'd have the brake fluid replaced, should be in the service book when it was last done.

Finally, if the gearbox fluid hasn't been changed recently, again I'd look at having the box drained and a new filter and fluid. If you're looking to keep the car for some time this can only be a good measure.

Wishing you all the best with your new car :)

Will

Welcome, fellow C280 owner;) As mentioned on the forum, you should check the wiper mechanism is nicely greased and clean, as these can be expensive to replace, so best to keep it running smoothly and greased well. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum.
As long as the car isn't rusty and appears generally mechanically sound it isn't a lemon. ALL 2nd hand cars have some problems which need sorting.

As others have said for the stering change the damper and have a 4 wheel alignment performed, also check the steering lincages and box for free play. The steering box is adjustable.

The whine sounds like it could be the differential and so an oil change might well cure this, it often does.

The brake pads are just the same as any other car and it's always worth changing all the fluids on a car as you don't kow the history of the ones in there.

Hello again Phil,
You've done more or less the same as I did 2 1/2 years ago.
Don't forget the car has a steering box, not rack & pinion, so expect a little play there, especially in the straight ahead position. The MOT should have picked up any problems. I run mine on Michelin E3A Energy tyres (last well and handle good too). Last car I ran on Eagles turned in quickly too, but they held on well. I think you'll get used to the turn in. When my son drives my C280 I notice he's surprised by the fast steering, and he's used to a quick tuned and lowered 306. Watch it if you have your best tyres on the front because the back can get twitchy in the wet! All predictable though. As for tyre pressures, there should be a sticker/transfer on the inside of your filler flap with the recommended pressures. I prefer to run mine at 32 front, 35 rear so yours are about the same.
Rear brake pads last quite a while, 2mm thickness is the minimum thickness but the pad wear indicator actuates at 2.5mm. I doubt if normally worn pads would affect your brake travel as the fluid would take this up in the hydraulic system. Probably the travel is just different from your Ford, give yourself time to get used to it.
Gearbox? Well mine is an auto and is quiet.
I've had absolutely no trouble from mine in the 2 1/2 years I've owned it. Had 80k on the clock when I bought it with full MBSH, but has done 102k now and I do all my own servicing. Change the oil and filter every 9k (use quality oil & MB filter), brake fluid every 2 years max., coolant every 3, plugs every 40k, air filter every 54k, auto transmission fluid & filter every 36k, lube that big single wiper (under the turtle shell cover - dead cinch to do), and hopefully, like me you'll be well pleased with your purchase.
I should buy yourself a Haynes manual (No. 3511). It doesn't cover the C280 engine, but is useful for everything else.

Hope you get on OK.

Best wishes, Ron

All good advice there Ron, but just one question - does yours definately have wear sensors on the rear? Neither of my W202s did that's all :)

Thank you all

Hi everybody

Many thanks for all your words of welcome, encouragement, advice and support. I really am grateful for all of your input and am going to be giving the car a good going over in the next few days and in particular checking the points that all of you have mentioned.

I am sure there will be one or two things that I will have to ask in the technical help but I really am so taken with this car that I have been driving it all day and loving every minute of it :D

However I did stop long enough to take a few pictures while I was out - here is a link to them: http://www.cig.canon-europe.com/ph/AEG/RequestViewAlbum.do?i=kJmfKH0TLC

Thanks again everybody for all your input and I look forward to being a regular forum member.

Rear brake pad wear sensors

Hi Will,
Good question! Blow it, I've only just put my wheels back on after swapping fronts to back to equal out the wear. Didn't check the sensor wires on the rears, just looked at the pad thicknesses which were OK. Perhaps Phil will take a look at his as he's going to give his car the once over and report back to us.

I certainly will :)

A warm welcome from me to the forum, im shure you will enjoy your stay here on the forum and your new C280. Ill have to say that the C280 deffinatly looks very good and theres not many around in that colour either these days so consider yourself with a exclusive C280. Perhaps you have not considered any mods yet but if ever you do try to change the front and rear light clusters to the facelifted ones which included the smoked rears and clear front corners, they will make it look alot better.

Hi gurpz

Thanks for your post & welcome

This is something I may well do!

Hi gurpz

Thanks for your post & welcome

This is something I may well do!

And don't forget the MB Cub Shiny pedals and the Avantgarde Grill. And a very warm welcome to the Club.
