K & N air filter

They have a reputation for ending the life of your MAS. It did mine in about 25 miles.

......................on the other hand mine worked a treat and improved throttle response significantly????

Grahams MAS was going anyway IMHO!!!!!! It was the shock it endured when the car inadvertently fell below 120mph for 5 minutes ;)

Green Cotton filters have been tried and tested by a few forum members with no probs.

K&N's have a bad rep. I think they can greatly accelerate the failure of an already failing or prone MAS, hence some are lucky and happy, others are not.

If I had been brave enough to keep the K&N and fit a new MAS, then I am sure I would have been OK, but I played safe.

Grahams right Green cotton ones dont seem to have the same question mark.

I still have a (barely used) K&N for a W202 in my garage .... free to a good home .... sure you don't want it Graham ??? ;) :p

do not forget to tell your insurance company anything not to standard is classed as a modification its the first thing an insurance assessor would look at

your braver than me if you chance a K&N in a newish merc :D

Ordered the green one for £54.23 inc vat and del.

The car is not new I’ve had it 9 years now. The new ones my wife’s and I’m not allowed anywhere near the engine bay.

:) :bannana: But not for long. :bannana: :)

R2d2

May be showing my age (something that seems to be happening all too frequently nowadays) but what is IMHO?

BTW R2D2's K&N is now in my W202 and is working very well :)

Cheers,
Steve

K&N filters, or any oil based filters can cause problems with a hot film MAS. The filter gets hot, the oil viscosity changes and particles can be carried in the air stream and collect on the MAS. I was advised by a few companies (F1Performance and DMS Automotive) not to use them.

No, kind of wish I had kept mine in, if the MAS had failed again I could have blamed MB for supplying faulty parts!

You're right. I would not use an oil impregnated filter on a vehicle with a hot film air mass sensor. Aftermarket filters with a high silicon content also seem to drastically cut the already short life. Therefore I would only use OE, Knecht, MAN or Hengst. The latter 3 being OE suppliers.

Glad to hear you are using it. How do you find, throttle response and fuel consumption.

I miss the throttle response but not the fuel consumption.
