Key transplant...is it possible?

Nothing really but............
The older style keys start to look a little bit battle worn after about 3-4 years of use.
The new chrome style key is much nicer to look at and feels of higher quality.
Much more in keeping with the the image of MB.................some might say......

could be a nice earner for someone then to make bespoke chromed units to which the innards and blade of existing black keys will fit into.
This would be more desirable surely than paying over £200 for something that is nit unique.
Any ideas.......

I could be a millionaire by next year!
(Million BAHT maybe)

Malcolm ( TV ) who was perhaps the best electronics guy i know , reckoned that he couldn't do it , so i'll be mighty impressed if you can.

Guys its already been done!!!! Here is the post on one of the other forums from January 2009.

I think all the crome keys on ebay will be getting snapped up soon :p, thats if your brave enough to do the soldering.

Wow ...

Involved though .... do you think you will get an electronics guy to do it for £20 ?

Lots of intricate soldering ....

The trick will be getting the circuit off the "black" keys pec without destroying it.

That I think would necessitate the use of a hot air station. Trying this with a normal soldering iron would for most people be a waste of time and money

I doubt whether anyone would take that job on with a guarantee of the key working afterwards. It would be a case of "at your own risk".
Personally I don't consider that a viable project at all. One where you have maybe a 50:50 chance of it working afterwards is not good odds. And its certainly not DIYable unless you are a true expert at soldering microcomponents.

I wonder how many people in the world in total have actually and successfully done this?
I would wager its in single figures.

Awww,
you stole my thunder!
I was waiting untill I found the "hot air station" bloke locally, chrome key etc and was going to post all the results.
Not a DIY job as you can all see, still looking for a bloke, I am planning on doing 2, we will just need to see what the results are.
Colin.

Keep us posted, although my Chrome key works fine, it doesn't work on the correct RF frequency for the UK. I wonder if swapping out this chip with one from one of my old keys would fix it? Or maybe the RF transmitter is a separate component, one of the other chips on the board...

Could be, but if I were MB the difference would be as simple as the position of a link on the PEC
