Know of any deals on oil at moment? (229.31)

Unless you've used it already, you can have a "spouse" card for free. Don't worry it doesn't have to be technically your spouse. That's how both Dazzler Snr and I both have a card, for the same £20 + VAT fee.

Yeah, the mrs has that one already, which is a shame as she says costco is 'rubbish'

You could always marry Gollom instead, as I'm sure he'll think Costco is great!!

I appreciate it may not be a terribley attractive proposition in other respects though. :D

Thanks. Has to be 229.31 I believe as the car has something called a particulate filter. But thanks for taking the time and trouble

Are you sure you actually have one, very few UK cars had them fitted. I believe they are still an optional extra and are not fitted as standard in the UK yet.

The Costco Mobil-1 oil for £23 for 4L is 229.5, it is NOT the low ash 229.x1 that is needed for cars with particulate filters.

You need Mobil-1 ESP (Emission System Protection) for that. I've never seen it at discounted prices anywhere.

How necessary this is, I don't know. There have been comments that even MB dealers don't seem aware of the .x1 requirement and are using normal oils.

Correct, but just to clarify, Costco Mobil-1 meets 229.3 & 229.5 in case there is any difference in both of those specs?

Russ

B service due here too - 229.3 I think is the right stuff for mine, why isn't it just simple - My montego and cavalier never really cared...

This has got me thinking. I was told by the Manchester MB dealer that I had one but that was only after a lot of humming and haaing which did not exactly convince me he knew for sure

So, how do I tell? Anybody out there able to tell by the VIN number?

Many thanks

Oil for E220 CDi W211 without particualte filter

Hmmmmm

Called MB and the guy there said he looked up my "electronic service sheet" and confirmed that I do not have a particulate filter as the car was filled at last service with Mobil 229.5 (which maps in with the handbook on a E220 CDi with no DPF)

So there you have it! Will get at Costco if one of the avenues people are helping with opens up, otherwise Opieoil looks favourite

Thanks all!

(Have added a title to help others if they search - Could a Mod please correct my spelling of PARTICULATE)

I've no idea if this is true or not, but I've read that if the car has a DPF then there's a sticker under bonnet to remind whoever is servicing the car to use 229.x1 oil.

It would certainly make sense if it is true, as low ash oil is important with DPF's.

Would you be interested in some Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 at £5 per litre?

I've just spent ages researching the best oil suitable for my Audi A2 Tdi, BMW 530d, SLK 320 and BMW Z3 2.8. The most demanding requirement was for the A2 which is on a long-life service scedule (30,000 miles between services) and needs oil which satisfies VW506.00 as well as all of the earlier specs. I finally chose Shell Helix Ultra VX which was VERY expensive.

For the two BMWs and the Mercedes I chose fully synthetic Helix Ultra Diesel 5w40 which seems to be just about the best available. It satisfies all the standards specified by both BMW and Mercedes for diesel and petrol engines, including Mercedes 229.3, BMW (Longlife) etc. I was a little worried at first about using it in the petrol engines but my Shell supplier assures me that it is ideal for both petrol and diesels, despite being labelled as Ultra Diesel.

In the end I bought a fairly large quantity in order to reduce the price, so I'm trying to recoup some of my outlay by selling the surplus at £5 per litre or £22 for 5 litres. It comes in the original factory sealed 1 litre bottles.
Let me know if you would like some.

Sounds interesting! Where are you? Obviously a level of trust here but I'm sure we could sort something. Drop me a PM with your details - I'd want 7 litres please

It will do the job but people should be aware that Shell Helix Ultra is a heavily hydrocracked dino juice thus a Group III oil, not a full synthetic in the the sense of being PAO or Ester based

Back to the old issue of there being no definition of "synthetic"

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=27956&v=f

If you delve far enough into the Shell website (and they do not make it easy) you will find that in the spec sheets

http://www.epc.shell.com/

Just to clarify: it's possible to have option 926 "Exhaust gas cleaning with Euro 4 technology" without option 474 "Particle filter". It's the filter that necessitates the special oil.

(Steve: from the VIN you sent me a while ago, I can confirm you have 926 but not 474.)

I am really confused now!! Am I ok using the Shell oil or should it be avoided in preference to an Ester based oil? Need to get this sorted by tomorrow so help appreciated. You reading this Guy?

We have a 211 and a VW Passat and so buy Mobil 1 ESP from Juing_oil on Ebay as it meets the MB spec for the 12-13k interval (229.51 for me - its also 229.31) and also the VW 506.01 spec for about 18k interval (for those who care, it also meets BMW Longlife4 so, for me, its also neighbour friendly!).

20L drum for £122.50 delivered = £6.11 per litre (not £14+ as per the dealers service price). For the 211, 8 x (14-6.11) = £63 saving per service.

Ask for a service price, get a quote itemised so you see the breakdown and then "remember" you have your own oil. Then try not to laugh as the service advisor tries not to grimace.

Cheap to top up too! (as Mobil 1 is about £13-£14 in the diddly 1L packs you find in the services).

This is the stuff and the seller I use (nothing to do with me!) : http://ngvi.ebay.co.uk/vi?ngvi&back...e=mobil+esp&pass=keIPaaJdwcNKJ6G4tq2q/MajfE8=

Hi Gollom
The more you read about different oils the more confused the subject becomes. The simple answer is to check the minimum specification required for your model (read the handbook or phone the dealership), and buy oil which meets those requirements.

Call Amanda and ask to speak to Fraser, he will tell you what oil to purchase. Or for a fee I will call them :D:devil::devil:

Esther based synthetics are true synthetics. Cracked mineral oil, is, well, modified mineral oil. To be honest any well known brand synthetic oil that meets the MB specifications - whether Esther or otherwise - will be fine.

Steve (Gollom). Your Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 is now on its way. I hope it reaches you in time for your service tomorrow!
If anybody else wants some please send me a pm.
Mike
