Kwik Fit rant...

...I was tasked with fixing the exhaust on my wife's Rav4 this morning. The rear silencer had separated from the pipe running the length of the car.

When I got the area cleaned up I could see the original flange on the back box had rusted off (and yet this is not a Mercedes). Since both pipes had a flared end I deduced that an exhaust clamp would fit over both ends and make a good repair. And, in the end I was correct...a good repair.

I didn't have a clamp, but I thought that our local Kwik Fit might. So I went along to them, explained what I needed, the guy took me into the workshop, immediately found what I needed, handed it to me...and would accept no money for the part.

In and out in less than 2 minutes...and no hassle...typical!!

Well you will get quite a few readers with that title.

And what a result. Magic. Hats off to them.

I really rate Kwik Fit. They gave my old man new tyre caps for a rav 4 FOC and have always been good with changing tyres and getting a good price. I got a puncture once and they had the tyre in stock, but wanted £200. Found the same tyre elsewhere on the web for £160. They matched it and fitted it for £160.

Once, they even let me use their ramp so I could get mud out from the wheel arch liner as they were changing the tyres on my E class.

They're not always good - i wanted them to change the oil on a 330d I had as they had a great deal using Mobil oil at the time - they insisted on the wrong grade oil - I confirmed the correct grade with BMW and Mobil in writing, took that to them and they basically told me to F off as their system showed a different oil.

Oil grade? As in 5W-30 or 0W-40? I thought this depends on ambient temperature - manufacturers usually simply provide the standard table rather than stipulate a specific grade.

Said that, as a customer, you should be able to specify the grade you want, so if they provided something else, you would have a case anyway regardless of manufacturer's spec?

I will never use Kwik Fit after getting ripped of a few years a go when I took a Vauxhall in and they refused to give me my car back until they replaced the brakes even though it was only a spring that wanted replacing.

A week or so ago I went into my local Kwik Fit to price up a couple of 195 55 16 Conti's for my car. I gave the size I needed and asked for them in the MO fitting.

I was told Continental DON'T make that size in the MO fitting. I questioned him on this as all 4 tyres on my car are all the same Conti's in MO fitting. The last two supplied by them.

I guess I will be going elsewhere for my tyres and get them cheaper as well.

Tony.

No No and No. I would rather walk than have my car work on by Kwik Fit.

Good old... Kwik Fit ... They cut my wife's car rear & centre boxes off without checking that they had any replacement parts. Once they realised that they didn't have any spares they then tried to convince me that a 1.6 petrol version of that exhaust would work fine on her 1.9 diesel car. I objected which meant they had to source the correct parts. Basically they gave me two options... weld up and refit the old exhaust as a temporary repair or leave the car over night ready to be fixed the next day... Because I needed the car I had the old exhaust put back on, then went to a local mechanic a few days later. Apologetic but useless!

It seems that Kwik Fit are just like MB dealers...some good some bad. But there does seem to be more bad stories about MB than KF.

Indeed... and this has been mentioned before in several thread - with hundreds of branches there bound to be a few good one and few bad ones.

Yep, as in oil grade - can't remember the spec off hand but it was something like 15w40 instead of 0w30 - way outside the table anyway. When I told Mobil what they wanted to put in the bloke actaully laughed out loud and said it would cause issues. Either too thick or too thin, can't remember which! KF sais they would look into it but it would take at least a couple of months. Wonder how many people had the wrong oil put in!!

Mixed bag in my experience. Basically comes down to whether you give them squirm room or not.

If it's a simple no brainer they're fine - took the old tyres off the split rims and didn't want any money for it (so gave them some beer money anyway). Any space to get "creative" and they'll go for it to extort as much profit as possible.

I really rate Kwik Fit.

I love Kwik Fit

OK, ***, we get the message... ;)
